The Democrat Party has announced six economic policies to support low income groups in the run-up to general election next year.

Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Friday the policies are aimed at relieving the burden of the low income group.

First, the party will support local communities to have joint ownership of land. If elected, the party will accelerate the issuing of title deeds for land holders to replace other types of document which are inferior. Those who have Sor Por Kor , a government land transferred to agricultural purpose to needy farmers, could be transferred as inheritances and could be used as loan collateral.

Second, the party will establish a community-water fund to help farmers to access water resource all year round.

Third, the party also pledges to guarantee minimum income for farmers: rice farmers will get Bt10,000 per tonne of rice, rubber farmers to get Bt60 per kilogramme of rubber sheet and palm oil farmers to receive Bt10 per kilogramme of palm oil. Insurance covering cost of farm production would be supported.

Fourth, the party will guarantee annual minimum income at Bt120,000 for labour.

Fifth, the partly promises senior citizens that they will get a cash handout worth Bt1,000 a month.

Sixth, those who have annual income less than Bt100,000 will get a cash transfer worth Bt800 a month.

Abhisit, did not reveal how his party would finance the projects, saying that the party would inform voters later. The means to mobilize funds would lead to narrowing the widening income gap, he added.

I believed the current Grade 3 sheet price which is the benchmark of the product is around 50B and they will get 60B. So Ahbisit is adopting a version of Yingluck’s rice price scheme. No?

Good luck to them, particularly if they actually get around to implementing all that (thru taxation on the wealthy).

But they do need to remember that former PMs & Ministers have been prosecuted & even jailed or threatened with jail for trying such schemes in the past ...

Far more indicative of what the Dems are all about than these trumped up sound bites is the recent stop-go-stop-go of the party 'leader' publicly demonstrating that he was, then he wasn't, then he was committed to leading his party forward. 'Committed' has this strange, cash-connection, here, in the land of piles. The only thing Abhisit wants to improve is his own asset chest, presumably under the floor somewhere, 'cos sure as hell, it won't be showing on his ATM slip.

ah ha! Yellows following in the footsteps of the Reds!

Yes, just as in every 'Western' democracy over the last 150 years: every step forward - votes for women, social welfare, trade unions, national health insurance, contraception, abortion, rights for poofters and on and on and on - was fought to a standstill by conservatives, plutocrats, reactionaries, nervous nellies et al. And, when finally introduced, Heavens above! the sky didn't fall in.

Should you not be cheering for it.. I mean when YL did so you were for that policy. I will as usual be against it as such policies are stupid you cant control the worlds prices and it could end up real expensive. I don't care what color comes up with these idea's they are all doomed to fail unless the government is flooding in money. That is one thing the government is not they never funded the hospitals enough either.

If he is endevouring to bring about equality he should create a "wealth tax" which could be imposed on the filthy rich 1% which have 66.9% of Thailand's wealth. The wealth of Thailand is about 525 billion US dollars therefore the filthy rich 1% own about 350 billion US dollars of it.

A "wealth tax" might balance things up a bit.
