Army Chief General Apirat Kongsompong on Friday inspected a physical fitness test of 345 Battalion Commander-level officers at Bangkok's Command and General Staff College.

The rigorous fitness test requires officers to acquire a 50 per cent pass rate, performing the two-minute session of push-ups (at least 72 times), a two-minute session of sit-ups (at least 72 times) and then a 2 kilometre run.

This was the first of two such tests conducted each fiscal year.

Army doctor Lt-Colonel Pak Loharachun from Nakhon Ratchasima's Surathampitak Military Camp, who had been involved in the successful mission to rescue the 13 football team members who were trapped in a Chiang Rai's flooded cave, took the test and passed with flying colours.

Apirat also later inspected the standard English language test at the college which involved 73 officers.

An award ceremony was to be held in the afternoon for the top scorers in the English and physical tests.

Lets see them running around the Parade Ground for an hour with Full Packs on and see how many are left standing at the end.

Naturally; the 'Award Ceremony' is the most important part of the day and everyone will get a pass, a Diploma and probably another Medal for their 'strenuous efforts'...Laughable.

I believe they'll also all get their paratrooper wings as well, since those seem to be a standard issue part of folks' uniforms these days.

Remember they only need to achieve a minimum of 50% of each exercise.  So 36 press-ups in 2 minutes, then 36 sit-ups in 2 minutes then a 2km run, but don't specify what time that needs to be achieved in.  Piece of cake and I'm 74 years old!

It sounds like what they are doing is the same as the British Army annual Battle Fitness test.  The number of press ups and sit ups you need to do to be classed as each fitness lever depend on age and gender.

72 press ups is the toughest hurdle and would class you as excellent of a male under 29.   35-43 would earn a good rating for a 40-44 year old male.  15-21 would be the same grade for a female of that age.

Requirements for the run varied enormously depending on your role.  The run is 2.m km (1.5 miles)  Paras need to do it in a pretty tough 9mins 40 sec.  Infantry get 12 minutes 45 seconds.  Most support services can take 14 minutes.

Anyone had a look at the Thai police force? So many of them are overweight, and could do with some of that training.

If I had my way, anyone who became overweight while working in a job that requires a good standard of fitness , ie Police, army, fire brigade etc, would be automatically sacked.

You been in the UK too long and have forgotten what Thai cops look like.  UK and US cops are fat - the Thai cops are the ones with the skin tight uniforms.

You never see cops in the UK to know if there are many fat ones, they are either sitting in offices, or cars, never on the streets.

I remember vividly when their Air Ships  introduced fitness tests for pilots in the UK RAF many years ago.  Many of the older guys on front line Squadrons nearly had a fit and they failed in their hundreds.  But, and here is the rub, they were all, almost to a man, the most experienced, talented and productive pilots in the Squadrons and would wipe the ass of the younger fitter guys every time.
