Heavy traffic was reported on Thursday afternoon on the northeast-bound Mitraparp Highway in Nakhon Ratchasima's Pak Chong and Sikhio districts as motorists look to celebrate the New Year.

There was a 10km jam on the section from the motorway construction site near the Lam Takhong reservoir to the front of Khlong Phai Prison in Sikhio, prompting police to open an extra lane.

Police advised motorists to use alternative routes.

Congestion spoils New Year trips

A sure way to improve the year's road-death toll, if the jammed-up motorists are looking for something to make them smile.

We used the alternative route at Pak Chong. It too was congested. Over an hour to get from Pak Chong and we still haven't passed the reservoir yet!

As a resident of Bangkok if you are crazy enough to travel by car long distances at this time (and Songkran) then no sympathy from me

If you are one of the low paid workers in Bangkok and these days are the only chance to see kids/family then they have my understanding.

The Bangkok taxis in the village are not here to pick me up.

Most of these people are not leisure travelers.

If you look for these then check the jams from Bangkok to Pattaya.

Saw this traffic snarl up first hand earlier today whilst travelling by night bus from Khon Kaen to Bangkok along route 2. Fortunately we were heading southbound but northbound traffic congestion and jams were all the way from Bangkok to Khon Kaen throughout the night. Luckily I managed to get a seat on an Air Asia flight back to Khon Khaen to avoid the nightmare and all the hassle. My journey was necessary as I had to collect my new UK passport.
