If the Falklands was invaded today, Could the UK without help take it back again

Back in the day, Maggie decided to go alone, to perhaps prove to the world, we were still a superpower, and by chance, was able to refit some long-range bombers that were headed for the scrap yard and aging ships, (but, still had to use commercial shipping including the QE2), plus knowing that enemies were also in political trouble in their own land, and would not be able to send mass troop deployment. We managed to win the schoolyard brawl. But now, I wonder?

The bombing by the aging Vulcans, though an amazing feat, had very little overall affect. None the less, air power was crucial to the outcome and without our single aircraft carrier, HMS Invincible, we would not have stood a chance.

 

We do now have a fixed airbase down there with a credible deterrence force in the shape of 4 Typhoons along with around 1,200 well equipped armed forces personnel. And there will be a well thought out rapid reaction plan to boost those defences.

 

And never overlook the power of the submarine. The sinking of the Belgrano, though controversial in some circles, discouraged any further action by the Argentine navy and had a major effect on the outcome of the conflict.

 

Yes, I do believe that if the Argentinians were foolish enough to try again, we would win again.

 

And by the way, I do not like your final comment that it was a 'schoolyard brawl' one little bit. It most certainly was not!

I was under the impression the UK was building 2 new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers. The first is undergoing sea trails the second still under construction.

Very true but no aircraft yet on them and no support vessels to ensure their safety in hostile waters.  White elephants both.

Thee was a documentary on recently about the 1st being a part of a NATO convoy around the Black Sea and then having a go in Syria.  I thought she looked pretty handy- aircraft or no.

Falklands are 200+ miles off the coast of Argentina. Do you think that all islands are the "property" of the nearest mainland country, or should the people whose ancestors have lived there for over 250 years decide?

I was a nipper of 14,  glued to the tv hungry for news.... that raid by the Avro Vulcans on Port Stanley was truly amazing, rattled the argies, I think they moved their aircraft back to the mainland after that seriously reducing their range of operation beyond the islands. Some stupid government minister gave the game away by publicly announcing the plan to launch an airstrike on port Stanley. And those Harriers..... ”counted them out, and counted them all in”   Yes, I'm British ???????? and proud.

I was there and proud to have been so. It makes me sad to think that some would just give them back without a second thought, but that is politics for you. The politicians always make the Military pay for their blunders. It was ever thus.

The Vulcan raids were pretty spectacular. I worked on Vulcans for many years so I know how difficult it was to achieve those raids. (read Rowland White's book 'Vulcan 607' for a fascinating account)

 

But it was the sinking of the naval cruiser Belgrano that really gave us the advantage in the air. The Argentine navy were so rattled at the thought of a submarine lurking in their waters that they never put to sea again. Which meant that their aircraft carrier never deployed.
