Is there any other reasonably developed and comparable country with daily tons of negative headlines and reports on any matter or subject? Traffic just one of them and it certainly gets more agressive a d chaotic by the day in Pattaya... MS>

Anupong why you spouting sh++e?

No way can you or any other government lacky fix this major problem.

Every year it is getting worse, nobody gives a toss about what you say, Somchai will carry on drinking regardless.

He is just waitng for Songkran for his next BIG pissup.

Anupong is ones of the best interior ministers I can remember. What he is trying to do is admirable and even if it saves a few lives it will be worth it. Not sure why you are slagging an attempt to make the roads safer.

As for referring to all Thai people as Somchai, that is a poor attempt at humour and frankly very offensive.

Upcoming election not relevant... apparently. Isn't this the guy suspected of major corruption in the Hua Hin park thingy?

A man to trust and no mistake.

Not relevant, as he's retiring.

As in 'shy and retiring' or as in 'retiring to the senate'? It can't be as in 'stopping work', we're both a good few years too late to witness that...

Passed about 12 check stations on the way to and from, from Udon Thani yesterday. Round trip 180km.

No police presence or vehicle checking.

Seemed to be a social occasion for Thais and just a few police or military.

No one was checking for drunk driving or other problems.

Also didn't see any police on the road looking for traffic violations.

Just the normal non action it seems.

Was the same both ways from Krabi to Satun. Lots of check points, not a single stop.

Well, the deputy governor of Chiang Mai province blames the rain and tourists. So get rid of both and you have a win-win situation.

those bloody tourist again, nothing but trouble - day after day year after year while all our competent licenced CM residents go about their accident free business, I'm sure all the business people of CM would love to see the tourist excluded completely from the province.

UK driving without a licence you can be fined up to £5000, have a delay put on getting your first licence that could be issued with 3 points already on it.

Drunk driving could be an unlimited fine and 6 months inside.

Bring those rules into Thailand and enforce them and you might see an improvement

I know, I know, I'll wake up soon, promise.

The UK is a developed country, Thailand is developing.

What was it like in the UK 50 years ago? Probably just a slap on the wrists of driving drunk.

Some people come here for the developing country's benefits and expect a developed country in other areas.

Efforts are been made and it's good to see.

No longer can one buy beer at the service stations, for example. Police corruption has been hit by Gen. Anupong in a big way. A few police departments don't take any bribes at all, special branch for example.

Even if all you say is true it means you are willing to accept total disregard of the rules and laws of the road, and, for how long?

Are you really going to accept the deaths of children and elderly who are mowed down by drunk drivers every day of the year, even if it's your child or elderly mother and pass it off on the lines of 'don't worry it'll be OK in 50 years time, the drivers will learn eventually.'

NB. They won't learn until they have to pay a large fine, do time and have their car impounded and crushed.

If any friend of mine killed an innocent while driving drunk that would be 100% the end of our friendship as I try my best not to befriend idiots.

Have a nice day.

I try to accept everything that I can't change, don't you? It makes for a happy outlook on life.

Gen. Anupong is trying to change it and has the power to, yet some criticize him, unfairly.

I don't have any friends who drink and drive, and personally have never drank even 1 beer and driven, have you? I know of many that think it OK here.

I hardly think that not drinking and driving is saintly. Just something that I personally find extremely irresponsible. Your inadvertent self admission is somewhat ironic, after what you said about the 'Somchai'.
