Im on the road for a longer trip, and now I got a cold with maybe some fever. Im in a remote village at the moment, and the only thing I got from the farmacia, is Moxy 500. 

 

I can not find out if it is useful for a cold, but I can see it is useful gonerea among other things. 

 

Anyone have experience as this is a emergency to get back on the road as quick as possible. Normaly I do not take any medicine at all when I get a cold. 

 

So, can i use it, and what dosage a day, and how many days? 

This is an antibiotic, amoxicillin.

 

It is no use whatsoever with a cold, only useful for certain bacterial infection. 

 

Indiscriminate use can lead to antibiotic resistance. In addition it may upset your gut flora - and for no good purpose.

 

Don't take it.

 

 

 

 

Ask for 'lemsip', it's much better for a cold.

Of course it isn't sold in Thailand but I'm told 'Apracur' does a similar job on a cold.

All for symptomatic relief.

If you don't find this "Apracur" you can resort to the (probably) no. 1 seller in Thailand:

Tiffy.

Also contains Paracetamol as a main substance.

Sold about everywhere. Even mom&pop shops in the village have it.

Don't drive using Tiffy, makes you very drowsy, don't know about the other one mentioned

Also, Delcolgen in a red and white package has the same formulation as Tiffy in post 4.  Reactions to medications can have different effects on the user, but I have taken both and I have never experienced drowsiness with either.  Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections, not viral infections, such as a cold.

I have now used tiffy for the last 24 hours, and side effects is diarrhea and sleepy. Im not sure if it helped at all. Hard to say. 

Unless the symptoms have you absolutely miserable it is best mot to take those sorts of things. Also, if you are too miserable I personally prefer not to use these combination type pills - which often contain things you may not need - but rather meds specific to what bothers me. E.g: if headache or aches and pains, paracetemol; if nasal congestion,  a nasal spray decongestant (the pills you can get over the counter don't do much. But use the sprays for only a couple of days and only as really necessary).  Antihistamine only if red eyes and lot of sneezing or other indicaiton of allergy. Mostly I need only the nasal spray.

 

redoxan (Zinc + Vit C, effervescent tablets) works wonders for me but best taken at first sign of symptoms. Zinc supplements have been shown to shorten the duration and severity of respiratory infections. In the West you can get zinc throat lozenges which help a lot but hard to find here.

Thank you for your reply and advises. I usealy do not use any for fever or cold except tylenol and or paracept if I have fever, or headick. 

 

It was just a try to get back on road a bit earlier, but Im still waiting for feeling a bit better.
