I'm truly not sure if this violates forum rules. I could see how it may, so I'll keep it as simple as possible. I live in Thailand and have a Slingbox running in the US. If you're not familiar with them go to http://www.slingmedia.com. Anyway, I've got a second one available for anyone interested in watching live US TV. It also has a TiVo (DVR) attached to it, so you can record all of your programs for viewing whenever you like (helpful given we're 12 hours ahead of where the Slingbox is. For those interested, it's New York television (Long Island). The picture is great...no lag after the first 10 seconds or so of buffering. If you're interested PM me and I'll allow you 24 hrs to check it out yourself, to see if it runs nicely for you. Note: you'll need an ADSL connection to see it. Again, TV forum moderators...if this violates any rules...just close it. Thanks!

Funny I posted something similar several times with regard to the UK where we have a 32 channel free service called Freeview but not a soul replied ! If it works for you from the States it SHOULD work from the UK !

Any Brits reading this ?

What speed connection do your have:

1. In Thailand

2. Back home

I looked at the UK site and was not impressed.

Trying to download the sw or guide fails......

The sw .exe file comes up as text on my screen....... :o

The US site is better organise and does work.

All this pre-supposes that we have base in the UK or US to set up the box?

Which is not true for all expats.

Via the slingmedia.com website, you download the Slingplayer for your OS. Then, if interested, I give you the connection details of my Slingbox (physically in NY, connected to cable television and a Series 2 TiVo [DVR]) and you see live television and control with a virtual remote on the screen. Take it one slot higher, and do like I do. I have my laptop, connected to my television and a remote control to use while surfing from my sofa. Just like being at home. PM (private message) me if you'd like to test it out on your connection. Just download the Slingplayer first (http://us.slingmedia.com/page/downloads.html).

Some of the channels available: CBS, ION, NBC, FOX, ABC, MyTV, The CW, PBS, A number of Spanish programming channels, MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, Fox News, Discovery, TLC, HGTV, Disney, Cartoon, Nickelodeon, TVLand, ESPN1 & 2, TNT, USA, TBS, FX, Spike, Women's Entertainment, AMC, Bravo, Lifetime, A&E, History, Sci-Fi, ABC Family, Comedy Central, E!, VH1, MTV, MTV2, Court TV, The Weather Channel...and a lot more.

I tried it out here, from Europe, and even on my paltry 1024/512 TTT/Maxnet@home ADSL connection during the day it was possible to watch. It uses ca. 256 kbps actual bandwidth for a decent picture - and that's constant. It will buffer a few minutes worth but if your internet stops for longer than that so does the picture.

You need a dedicated connection at home for this to work. You can share the picture but the system can only send one channel at the time so you better make sure you agree which channel that should be. It's also not cheap. You need your standard cable/satellite subscription, receiver, slingbox and adsl connection in both ends to make it work.

But it's there, technically possible.

Now we just need to get the cable/satellite companies to realize they might as well cut slingbox out of the loop and provide the service directly :o

In BKK on a True 2Mbps / 512kbps line I consistently get 600+ kbps from the Slingbox. The only time I ever had trouble (in the past 8 months I've been using it) has been when the Taiwan earthquake caused int'l bandwidth disruption.

I think your answer is in the original post.

But, if what Phil Conners says is true then we of the poor ADSL connection in Thailand may still hope :o

When you've been watching nothing but Chinese fighting shows and katooey variety hours, getting The Simpson's even at low resolution if a blessing. :o

A big thanks to Strongview for letting me try the service today.

On my 512kb/s link here in Penang the TV feed was steady.

The remote, to control the box and change channels is a brilliant idea.

Maybe I need to find a UK based friend to set up a box for me........

Mind you I am not sure what I would want to watch,

as I am so out of touch with UK programming.

Always glad to be of service. Sorry to have kicked you off prematurely. If anyone out there is interested in watching US television in Thailand (or anywhere you go in the world with a 256kbps or higher connection - airports / hotels), send me a PM and I'll let you check it out for 24 hours no charge.

I am able to watch all the shows I like at my leisure, on my 32" LCD. I watch Heroes (S01E16), House M.D. (S03). Numb3rs (S03), Studio 60 (S01), Rome (S02), Dexter (S01, renewed!), 30 Rock (S01), My Name is Earl (S02), Scrubs (S06), Shark (s01), The Simpsons, The Wire, Grey's Anatomy, SNL, Real Time with Bill Maher and Entourage.

Sometimes in HDTV!

No slingbox required. If you have an ADSL connection here in Thailand there really is no reason to use a Slingbox unless you like to suffer.

Don't keep us in suspense........

HOW??

I suspect you're about the only one in suspense. :o

Sharing a legal service like Cable via Slingbox for renumeration sounds a bit dodgy too. :D

See "Fair Use".

Anyone have a proxy for Canada?

Mine is in the US.

I tried this with a UK proxy for the BBC before, but it still did not work. Still worth a try, though, but I'm too lazy to try them out for myself, so you'll have to check for yourself:
