Just heard from someone applying for retirement in Thailand from nonimm O that immigration wanted 2 x 800,000baht in bank as husband and wife are both farangs. I was under the impression that 800,000 was the requirement for husband and wife. Or am I wrong ?

If they ask for retirement extensions of stay for each they each will have to qualify. One could qualify and the other use dependent at no deposit requirement if they have legal marriage.

When you say legal marriage - just a thought but.. I am married in UK, is this recognised inThailand as legal marriage or do I have to register with authorities (as in Malaysia)

Can you register a marriage twice?

Surely that is Bigamy?

Its the case in Malaysia that UK marriage is not recognised for legal purposes (as in visas) so you have to register at Malaysian embassy and get the certificate of marriage so that it is accepted there
