Personal Tax Id Without A Work Permit?

Recommended Posts

I am a US citizen in need of a personal tax ID number to do some work over the Internet. Is there a way I can get this without a work permit?

Can anyone provide a sample personal tax ID number so I have an idea of the format and number of digits in case I want to pretend like I have one already? It's 'for the record', and I don't think they'll be doing any tax reporting (as no income is being earned - why they need it I don't know)

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. It is a nine-digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a 7 or 8 in the fourth digit, example 9XX-7X-XXXX. IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

however, i don't recommended putting down anything bogus on an official application in thailand.

I don't think he's looking for a US ITIN. As a US citizen, surely he already has a SSN or can get one by stumbling into a SSA office. As a US citizen he can not even apply for a ITIN.

Regarding the Thai tax id no, I know some people who paid taxes in TH using just 0's in the field for tax id no on the tax declaration until they got work permits. It was accepted as they (like tax authorities anywhere) are more interested in getting the money than anything else. Of course that may have changed - this was back in 98-99.

Thanks for the info.. I contacted the company and was able to use my passport number in place of the tax ID number.

On my way to getting my own!

Just a "thout" (sorry!)

But if you decide to submit - in response any request for an ID Number - a false one, why use another, identifiable, one such as your Passport Number?

I am in no way condoning submitting false information but, if you do, why leave a traceable one? Who knows when that may come back to bite you?
