We use Ivermectin tablets about every 2 months or so.

Brand name "EN-DEX 4000" or "EN-DEX 8000".

1 tablet of the 4000 version for 10 kg weight.

Works good against ticks (and heartworms as promised).

Does not seem to work (good) against fleas.

I bought a 100 tablets for 700 Baht at a Thai online shop (Thai language only).

Don't know why it is not on Lazada.

I use the spot on treatment from the pet shops... once a month on the back of their necks.  Not had a tick on my dogs for years... and they run about all over the place.. fields, forests etc.

I used to use EN-DEX tablets but the local supply shops all said no more, so I reverted to some other brand on Lazada more expensive and not as good.

Any chance of the link to the online shop.

Thanks

That was through the Tarad.com website and the shop called "Buddy Dog Shop".

Take care for correct dosage and interval.

There is a multitude of other sites and even cheaper, but some just through Facebook sites.

En-Dex works a treat, but my vet advised me not to use it as it damages the dogs liver, this is why you won't find it at a vets in most cases it is under the counter as it is not approved.

My local "pet-food" supplier sells these for 70bt for 10... (for the 4000, which I use 1/4 to 1/2 for my cats)

My local vet once charged me 400 bt for one "8000" for my old dog (no long with us).....  Needless to say I no longer use that vet.

I agree, they're not particularly effective against cat fleas

Bravecto or Nexgard where we are seem to be the best bet. Spot ons have failed numerous times on dogs within our extended family so have to go the stronger stuff. Just watch closely for side effects - the vast majority of dogs tolerate them well.

Not sure if you want to know about prevention or vaccines. There aren't any tick vaccines (which only protects against Lyme) as far as I am aware in Thailand. Prevention is a much better option anyway.

I use the same,  revolution brand.  it seems to work well although the dog definitely get a reaction for 12 hours or so.

I use the topical spot-on. Seems to work OK. My dog is quite old (22 years!) so I prefer to avoid systemic medications as much as possible.

Same here.  What breed of dog is living 22 years ??   I have a pomeranian,  does that mean she will probably outlive me ?  haha

A Chihuahua but probably not pure breed one. Also full sized, not miniature. One Vet thought he might be a Chihuaua/Pinscher  mix. He was a rescue so not sure.

Not only is he at least 22 but he still runs like the wind and remains a formidable watch dog. (If he hears the intruder, that is...his hearing is not as acute as it used to be and he does sleep more of the time and more soundly!). He remains the inflexible foe of the cleaning lady, as you can see here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlFXTJkqook

Chihuahuas are known to live longer than most dogs (though 22 is still unusual). Poms not so much. If it is a pure bred Pom they are prone to a lot of musculoskeleteal problems, it is important not to let them get at all overweight.   There used to be a Pom in my extended family, he died due to traumatic injury (mauled by larger dog) but before then had been in and out of hospital with a lot of chronic ailments.

They are really adorable dogs , though. I still miss mine, in fact am just in the process of burnishing his head stone  (he's buried in the garden).

My dogs love my cleaning lady!  Although that's not suprising as a) she loves animals and spends a lot of her time here making a fuss of them and b) she always brings them food, either cooked by her mother for them or bought from 7/11 or roadside stall. ????

Back on topic, the 'back of the neck' products didn't work for me or my dogs - and so I regard Bravecto and Nexguard as 'wonder drugs' that finally eliminated the (previously) never ending tick problem.

We have two Chihuahuas similar size to Sheryls (dog is 6kg, his sister is 5.5). They get Bravecto but they don't like the "delicious chewable tablet", Madam hides it in chicken liver which vanishes in an instant.

We have chooks and guinea fowl which munch up pretty well anything that creeps or crawls anyway and the dogs don't leave our 1.5 rai garden.

Thanks for posting Crossy I too have a 4kg Chihuahua and I googled Bravecto and was taken aback by numerous reports of dogs falling I'll from it.

I take my 2 dogs out, the other being a 30+kg German Shepherd mix and they love going off track in the wooded area I take them for their daily romp and I think that's where they pick up ticks. I am going to get me some Bravecto and see if I can at least reduce the number of ticks.

Nexguard Spectra seems to be a better option?

Taken monthly, so likely less toxic?

My dogs used to have serious problems with ticks and tick-borne blood parasites.

The problem disappeared after giving them first Bravecto, and then Nexguard Spectra.

yes, i use nextguard spectra--not cheap, but as my dogs stay outside, it is one of the few meds that will act against fleas, ticks and heartworm--my dogs have tolerated it well.

My Thailand Vet started my Pomeranian on"Revolution" brand flea/tick control.  It seems to work well but when I put it on the dog, behind her head,  she seems to have a reaction of watering mouth and get very excited for a short while.  My concern now is the dosage.  She is now about 5.8 Kilos.  The package say it is good for 2.6-5 kilos.  The next higher level package goes from 5.1-10 Kilos and is Double in strength.   I am concerned that this will be too strong for her.  I was thinking that if I put it on her every 25 days instead of the recommended 30 days this will allow for a higher levels in her blood without going to the next higher level package. It is NOT the money I am concerned about.  Thanks for any help.

My Japanese Spitz made it to 19 years old, eventually total organ failure.

My bullmastiff made it to 16 years old.

I think its down to food and life style , and of course the genes, but i think diet and life style also makes difference ????

Miss my oldies dearly

Many are happy with vaccinations, personally i do not believe its very healthy for the dogs.

The bravecto and alike have had a large number of death cases https://www.wideopenpets.com/bravecto-flea-medication-suspected-in-numerous-dog-deaths-worldwide/

A friend of mine gave bravecto to his 9 year old bulldog and found her dead in the morning.

I think powder and sprays are best options . pills and injections can be poisonous.

Totally agree with you ! People are crazy to give more chemicals to their dog, including pills.

I spray vinegar everywhere and on dogs, it's natural and seems to work perfectly.

Yes , my oldies were getting raw meat. Half  their life was chicken and another half kangaroo meat. By the end of the life back on chicken mixed with veggies. Plus quality dry biscuits, always good brands like Royal Canine or Science Diet, plus daily walks morning and evening, did not miss even 1 day ????

It's probably a decision that depends on the number of ticks in your vicinity.

As mentioned previously, I had SERIOUS tick problems in the past (whilst using the 'back of the neck' products), that resulted in various and frequent tick-borne blood parasites.  I was lucky and took my dogs to the vet as soon as I saw anything 'off' in their behaviour.  (After the first time, when I was slow to realise, and my dog almost died ☹️.)

Others haven't been so lucky - and their dogs eventually died as they had been left untreated for too long.  Not their fault, as the 'symptoms' are extremely minor - until it's too late.....
