Smog returned to most parts of the Greater Bangkok on Wednesday afternoon.

Out of 43 areas where air-quality monitoring devices are available, 28 found the PM2.5 amount went past the safe limit at 3pm on Wednesday.

The World Health Organisation has described PM2.5 as carcinogenic. According to Thailand’s Pollution Control Department, the amount of PM2.5 should not go beyond 50 micrograms per cubic metre of air.

In Bangkok’s Charoenkrung-Bang Kho Laem area, the amount of PM2.5 stood at 46 as of 9am on Wednesday. The amount then soared to 58 by noon and 64 by 3pm.

Air pollution looks set to continue in the Greater Bangkok on Thursday.

They've done nothing more than spray water in the air, or fine smog machines, did anyone seriously think that would cure anything?

Water sprayed into the air collects the particles and brings it down to ground level to settle on every surface.

Water evaporates, it turns into vapour and rises back into the air, taking all the PM2.5 or PM10 back up with it !!

Starting at ground level where all the people are and breathing it in!

The figures quoted, whilst accurate, use a scale which is different from that which is most commonly used, possibly creating the impression that the pollution is not so severe. The reality is 160 appx. on the most universally accepted measure.

There is also the myth that air pollution is driven by external factors, that traffic pollution is insignificant, or the pollution of no consequence since it is not as severe as in some other cities in the world.

This problem could get out of hand quickly. Then there would be nothing the Thais could do. But they dont understand the problem, dont understand the science behind it, and seem to seek out fortune tellers or the retarded to get advice like spraying water 20~30 meters in the air (problem solved!).

This coupled with a potential major downturn in tourism due to smog, rampant crime, careless accidents, murders that are covered up, and those getting cheated left and right will have large and long standing effects on the thai economy.

The government can stop this in a heart beat.  Here are a few suggestions:

a) Stop blowing useless water into the air and use the same resources to patrol for illegal fires.

b) Impose impartial monitoring of all crop purchases for burn marks

c) Impose monitoring of all farm lands for burning

d) Impose huge legal penalties including confiscation of land for any violators

e) Cut all sale of deisel vehicles in Thailand and phase out diesel completely.

f) Relocate all factories out of zoned urban areas.

The only problem is that these actions require accountability, foresight and intelligence.

Thank you.  I've been wondering for ages why the apps I use are reporting 160-200 while I keep hearing about 50-60 levels.  Do you happen to have a link to anywhere with more detail about the scales?

Stay in Europe mate. We won't miss you.

I get so sick of the Ban,Tax, Crush,Regulate and Fine posters on this site.

Please just stay away from Thailand and SEA in general if you feel so strongly about this. If you live here and hate it....then you have alternatives....but please stop whining...it does no good and annoys most people.

The only problem is to implement what you suggest is Communism or a permanent dictatorship or an EU dictatorship style government.I don't think the Thai people want or would accept any of these for an extended period.   Nor do the thinking British people apparently.

Why do you associate good health laws with communism or the EU bureaucracy.  For example in Australia we all live happily with such laws.  Many people do.  We have the laws to protect the health of ourselves and our children.

Sorry mate - Im not from Europe and have no desire to go there.  Ive probably been in Thailand far longer than you and probably have more right to be.  Why does Improving health standards and particularly for children have to just be the domain of developed countries.   Dont just come to Thailand to see it degenerate into your ideal anarchistic society.  Most Thais want improved living standards even if it doesnt help you or destroys your purchasing power over the locals.
