I had my cat spayed when she was about 6 months old.  She developed a fever and started vomiting a few days later.  An ultrasound showed that it was just a mild case of gastroenteritis BUT, it also showed that one of her kidneys had failed and the other one didn't look to healthy either.

We immediately put her on a low-protein diet and her remaining kidney is still functioning well.  The vet predicted that she would only live 6 or 7 years, but she is now over 8 and still healthy.  So, a baseline ultrasound can be a real lifesaver.

Getting back to the topic, she loves to catch and eat those tiny geckos, the rats fled from the house when she was still a kitten and she won't eat cockroaches, but she will play with them until they are 'broken'!
