Waitress kept all the change

I'm not quibbling about the amount, it is the principal that the waitress automatically decided that she would keep the 35 baht, and yes I know that waitresses don't get paid a fortune, that's her problem for failing in her education or life in general not mine, if she were an intelligent sort of person she wouldn't be waiting tables would she ? It is the assumption that she is entitled to keep the change, nothing more nothing less.

in many usa cities india nationals are in blue collar jobs driving taxis because despite passing multiple very difficult exams as medical doctors they cannot find residency training programs due to insufficient number of spaces. some are recent grads and some are seasoned specialists already under their british like system.

I was in 'Foxy Lady' a few weeks back (gogo bar), drinks were 160bht, my pals and I only had 100bht notes, they tried to keep the change but my pal went to the cashier and got us all our 40bht change.

It isn't a problem just say 'Where is my change?"

due to slow/no service after waiting i walked to the bar at a bkk gogo to order a beer. paid with exact change and bartender lady got angry pointing at change tray saying "you give tip" if server brings me a drink i always tip but if service compromised and i must go straight to counter to get somewhere then no tip.

lots of entitlement especially in tourist area businesses and especially in the bar/ gogo sector which seems to attract lower levels of society.  i have never experienced such behaviors at thai pubs/ music venues

Along your journey if you ever worked a job for 1.36 au$/hr then I put you in the same league as the lass in question and I'm angered that you had to go through such hardship.

But please do keep in mind , not all have the mental and physical aptitude that you possess. It's not good to take advantage of these people with such low salaries.

They should be paid what you'd expect to be paid and not paid the lowest that could be possibly gotten away with.

Apples and oranges. We can quote $1.36 an hour, but she's not working in the western world. Wages should only ever be considered in proportion to the cost of living in the country which it is earnt. Not making this blanket argument that because $1.36 doesn't go far in your home country that it is a completely outrageous wage here and therefore it makes theft okay.

I know plenty of Thais who get by on a similar wage. It's not a flashy lifestyle, but it's probably comparable to people I know in the west who also live on minimum wage in terms of food, roof over head etc.

I think it's not about the money but more about the principle, and that's the discussion that the thread is provoking.

True. Attitude that rules in general in most societies is that survival of the fittest takes place.

And most will take to their own advantage ahead of others' interests, wether it be the girl who takes a forced tip or the businessman that pays her peanuts.

Some will side with the girl. Some not.

I've made it clear the girl should not be judged harshly. Others think differently. So be it.

Some people have not quite grasped the concept of principles, and that shows in some of the replies on here, I have just had my haircut, a Thai guy that I have used for years, his charge to me is Baht 150, I give him Baht 200, because I want to and he provides me with a reliable service, now can you flamers see the difference ??? I really do wish that some of you would wake up and smell the coffee.

Agree, I tip often and well, but the tip should always be given, not assumed. But maybe I'm just a rich businessman exploiting the poor old girl serving me drinks.

Some people on here clearly think theft is okay if the person is poor. I'd be interested to see how they'd feel if their house was burgled by someone poor. It's technically the same principle.

<deleted> get a life you moaning lot.  There’s a lot more injustices in this world than getting hung up on a 35B tip.

And that sir is the crux of the thread, which you obviously haven't read, it wasn't a tip, the girl decided it was, subtle difference, get a life yourself ????

They should never assume!

At one local desert cafe I paid for the 4 of us and we were walking away when the waitress came with like less than 10 baht change which we told her to keep. Yesterday I gave a taxi driver 150 for a fair of 119. I went in my house to stamp the mobaan security slip for him and he had 30 baht change ready to give me. I gave it him for a tip, he was very helpful, big smile and wai in appreciation.

I tip good service and don't tip poor service. I would regard taking a tip without asking as very poor service.

If the OP was an intelligent sort of person, he would have avoided this restaurant since he claims it has 'happened before'.

He's probably more annoyed that he's just too meek to simply ask, "Can I have my change please?" Some people are uncomfortable with even the slightest degree of confrontation, regardless if they are totally entitled to initiate it. However, keyboards and the internet do go some way towards assuaging this social inadequacy.

I NEVER eat where there are other foreigners or a English menu NEVER. But then again avoid any places like Pattaya, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Udon Thani, or Khao San Road. Guess what ? 99.99999 % of the time i have few if any issues with the Thais. In my opinion the foreigners in these places attract problems like a magnet.

i just recalled an even more annoying habit i encountered when i was new to thailand.

i went with my gf and her two daughters to swensens,

then, just as we sat down, a group of complete strangers came

and joined our table, and ordered the costliest icecreams on the menu, they ate at record speed and ran off,

leaving me with the bill for everyone

And this is NOT the USA!

The young waitress is so lucky it is NOT the US of A. No doubt the poor girl would have been arrested, shot or at the very least blasted by a taser.

Cannot believe, 10 pages of comments on this. Never read them all but I’m sure they are mostly rants and a few funnies, all over a 15 baht mistake at his regular food joint. Jeez some TV chaps require some serious therapy.

'....social inadequacy...'

Seems to me it's a positive to avoid confrontation, and especially over such a simple matter.
