A 59-year-old monk making his alms rounds was struck and killed by a speeding pickup truck in Chumphon on Wednesday morning.

Police and rescue workers were called to the scene on Pathiu-Chumphon Road in front of Wat Laem Yang (Luang Por Khien) in Pathiu district at 4.30am.

Pickup driver Apiwan Bulong, 42, had already been taken to hospital with injuries.

Her truck was still at the scene, the body of Phra Kittipong (last name unknown) pinned at the rear of the pickup by the impact.

Police determined that Apiwan approached the location at high speed and lost control, spinning into a ditch.

That section of the road is being expanded in readiness for increased traffic in and out of Chumphon Airport.

The monk’s body was sent for autopsy. Police are waiting to speak to the driver, investigator Pol Lt Colonel Supakit Panaschee said.

Just not safe anywhere or at anytime... what sheer madness !

Thai drivers are pretty crazy, but Thai women drivers, whoa.  In a whole league by themselves.

This is the second such incident of a monk being killed in three weeks, while on his alms rounds. We just cremated the first one four days ago!

If it moves run it down even wearing orange and being highly visible offers no protection from these lunatics????RIP

At 4.30am, isn't this a bit early?

Thanx.

I can confirm my missus is an excellent, safe and conscientious driver.

With zero accidents in the last 10 years.
