cynnie40
Hi, I would like to know has anyone any experience of teaching and living in Phuket on a salary of 80,000 baht before tax? How much tax would be taken every month from 80,000 baht? How much would a house and garden that accepts pets be to rent? Overall, would that pay range cover costs of living comfortably in Phuket? Thanks in advance.

tlandtday
really no more expensive than pattaya but so many who never visit and read the sex boards seem to think it is prohibitively so lol
ChasingTheSun
The further you get from the west coast, the cheaper your rent. You can rent a small basic thai style house in the interior of the island, or nearer the east coast, for 10k/month. A small basic house near to west coast may start at 15k-20k/month. phuketrichard
you can rent a house anywhere on the island for 10-100,000baht/month You can live very well on that salary UNLESS u like drinking and not sleeping alone I live a very good lifestyle in kamala for half that. for 2 of us
Somtamnication
Sounds like a job at Headstart. Doable, it is a good salary for the region. The villas (2, 5, California and Chao Fa) all have decent homes. The newer ones are more expensive. At 2, 5 and California, you can get them for about 10k a month. If your expenses are accommodation and some meals (free lunch), rent a bike, then it is ok. Avoid the schools. They pay less than 50k.

This is a useful starting point, but remember to add in costs of expenditures that are not covered by that website. They include: Your health costs Insurance for your health, accident, property, vehicles Travel Pet food and health Charity/gifts And that list doesn't include the potentially huge increase if you have a dependent GF/partner, or partake in renting them regularly. 80K before tax is certainly doable and you can live on it comfortably, but it comes down to your desired lifestyle. Without taking deductions into consideration 80,000 x 12 = 960,000 baht a year. 150,000 (0 - 150,000) tax = 0% = 0 bath 150,000 (150k - 300k) tax = 5% = 7,500 baht 200,000 (300k - 500k) tax = 10% = 20,000 baht 250,000 (500k - 750k) tax = 15% = 37,500 baht 210,000 (750k - 1 million) tax = 20% = 42,000 baht Total 107,000 baht, or 11.15% of 960k baht. Your can read more about Thai income tax and deductions here. Social Security, which is not mandatory for foreigners, but advisable, will be total 1,500 baht a month – normally shared with half paid by employer, and half paid by employee – i.e. 18,000 baht a year, or 9,000 baht if shared, including free access to public (government) hospitals for health care. After tax and fully paid SS you should have at least 838,000 baht left, or almost 70,000 baht a month. Living costs is like a rubber band and depend on your life-style, many Thai can live from a lot less, including both pets and family. A (nice) house can be rented from around 15,000 baht a month and way up, perhaps even less. You can live well for 500 baht a day in average, or 15,000 baht a month – depending of choice of life-style – but if you smoke and drink, you might need more. Depending of number of pets, and kind of pets, the daily cost could be anything from 10-20 baht and (way) up; a fat hi-so Thai cat that consume steamed salmon only might cost more (knew a Swedish lady here that had one)... Transportation, you could long term rent a motorbike for around 2,500 to 3,000 baht a month – or buy one instead – or long term rent a car from 15,000 baht to 25,000 baht a month; or consider using a combination of bus , song thaew, and taxi instead. Clothes, leisure, relaxation, and any other thinkable extras, could be in the area of 15k baht a month, depending on your pets and other expenses for house, food and transportation; including that you should keep little money in savings, just in case something unforeseen happens. If you are not using the Social Security option, you should consider a heath insurance instead; count from 20,000 to 30,000 baht and up in annual fee, could be higher depending of age and coverage. I don't live on Phuket, but another island with similar level (or higher) living costs. We can live a family of three, and two-three pets for almost similar level of budget, including school fees; but of course we need to make compromises, like we cannot dine at gourmet restaurants every day...????

dinsdale
Bt80,000 p/m and you're asking this. Are you pulling the piss or just rubbing in the salt. Do you have a Masters in Education? If you do have a M.Ed then why come here? This country is f#####d to teach in. Way too many hoops to jump through set up by a ministry of education with the collective IQ of a newt. Where's the job. I'll apply.
