A Korean man reported to police that as he walked along Pattaya Sai 2 near Central Marina a tall man suddenly came up to him, greeted him and gave him a hug.

The man was a European wearing jeans but no shirt, said Gyb Sub Kim, 50.

Mr Kim managed to get away and hail a motorcycle taxi that took him back to his hotel.

Once he was there he realized that he had lost 400,000 won worth 13,000 baht.

Police are studying CCTV to try and get a lead in the case.

A shirtless European man give the Korean man a hug ? Sorry I don't believe this story at all. An insurance scam is the first that comes to mind. CCTV will probably not show anything.

The first step for the police to start the investigation is to inquire / get CCTV footage and get bar girls to come forward with any information regarding a "topless European farang" ringing the bell at a bar.

Quite a small amount for an insurance scam , more likely an explanation to his Mrs as to where all his money went

One of the most clever pickpocket methods is the hugger-mugger. This trick works as an unsuspecting patron is entering a pub. When the mugger stumbles out, they will try to get friendly with the person entering – usually embracing them with a hug. When they go in, the mugger uses the opportunity to take a passport or wallet with them.

This is an easy scam to pick up on and watch out for. If someone's going for the hug, simply step away. It is always better to step off and be rude than to have your wallet stolen.

Note to self, beware of shirtless huggers.. so as it turned out, one man's won is another man's win...

And shirt lifting huggers, beware.

Here is a tip for Thai police. Tell the foreign currency exchange outlets to be on the lookout for a non Korean national exchanging won. Be warned though, he might be really cunning and put his shirt back on !
