Immigration chief Lt-Gen Surachate Hakparn announced the arrest of a team of three Mongolian pick-pockets preying on tourists at a famous Bangkok temple.

The temple was not named by INN but the report of the theft by an American was made to Phra Ratchawang police indicating it was in the central tourist area of the capital.

Arrested were Munkhtsetseg Batbold, Sukhbaatar Solongo and Garamjav Zolsaya.

Cash and other valuables were stolen from the American. A credit card was subsequently used to buy goods at a store.

Surachate said that the team of thieves used pick-pocket techniques in the crowds to hide their activities and make the victim unaware that they had been robbed.

Couple of points: Apparently it is very difficult to pickpocket someone who is moving - be wary of tactics to make you stop. The wallet is immediately thrown to an accomplice and then another so even if you recognise what is going on the one who took your wallet does not have it. Peruvian gangs in London would then immediately post the money stolen back to Peru - very difficult to get access to a post box for retrieval/evidence.

Good advice, one of my pals lost his wallet near Pantip Plaza a while back. He was walking in the middle of a crowded sidewalk and all of the sudden an elderly lady in front of him fell down. When he stopped to avoid stepping on her he was bumped into from behind by two young women, he had not gone but a few steps and realized his wallet was gone but the girls had already vanished into the crowd.

In Mongolia in the Black Market in the capital Ulan Bator pickpockets are rampant. If you wear those baggy multi pocket pants they will slice the pockets with a cut throat razor. But they are not after passports, only money and credit cards, they will throw the passport onto the ground. Oddly the rest of the country is great and the people are fun and friendly. But don't go in the winter as it can get down to -50 C, not fun......and the winter is from late Sept thru end of May. The country is right below Siberia so the weather is the same.
