Can't say I've ever asked to see a girls 'health certificate'

Although sometimes I ask to see proof of age.

Many years ago in Pattaya many girls carried a stamped card I think it was that was updated monthly. It was quite well maintained. With the onset of more infections to worry about it all seems to have got looser.

A few of the farang bars do HIV testing every 3 months. There's a log book in the cashier area.

And I guess if they have HIV positive it will be in the log book and nothing happens...

Or maybe there is a 200B fine for skipping the test...

Regardless of if true or not, anyone jumping into the sack with a prostitute who doesn't use a condom is an absolute idiot. And I would say that is true the world over, not just Pattaya.

Actually, in developed countries the HIV prevalence is no higher in the average sex worker than the average women -- only the unstable, typically drug-addicted, street-walking hookers have higher rates (than employed escorts, massage therapists and strippers engaging in commercial sex!)

It is 1 in 100 for the high risk hookers, by the way, and 1 in 1000+ for other commericial sex workers and the average bird.

Dunno about Thailand though. I am sure the rates are higher.

There is a very easy solution to this problem. All those Brits who worry about their health should stay at home in the UK. It also has the advantage that they have the NHS over there.

And in the UK the change to get AIDS is nearly zero. Not that HIV is unknown over there. But who wants to have sex with British women?

The chance of getting HIV from a single episode of vaginal sex is always nearly zero.

The odds the average woman has it is 1 in 1000+ and the transmission rate from woman to man per episode of vaginal sex is 1 in 1000+. So that is an overall risk of 1 in 1,000,000 per episode of sex. As a decimal that is 0.0000001% chance.

Even if it was the riskiest female sex worker. The prevalence is 1 in 100+. Then, multiply that by the same transmission rate again and you got 1 in 100,000 (or 0.000001% chance).

Simply put, HIV is rarely transmitted by one-off encounters of vaginal sex, even when the virus is present, it typically takes repeated exposure before infection occurs. Most specialists have never had such a patient, although they have read about it occuring.

Lightning strikes are actually more common, not to mention being fatally shot or killed in an accident.

Even if she actually had it for sure, and you had sex with her once, the odds are still in your favor of 1 in 1000 (or 0.0001% chance). You would have to have sex with her every day for several years before infection would be absolutely likely!

Just some factual perspective to the usually irrational fear we have regarding STDs, compared with other risks and fates.

Still, that said, you should use condoms for vaginal and anal sex to prevent HIV!

I do think that your figures are incorrect .

In Thailand , 1 out of 100 people has HIV and for unsafe sex workers , that figure would be alot higher .

The chances of contracting HIV from an infected person are 2 % when having unprotected sex .

Nope.

The 1 in 100 figure doesn't take into account sexual orientation. The prevalence is heavily skewed to men who have sex with men (not heterosexuals where HIV is particularly rare).

And the 2% figure you quote is high. It would be 1% for receiving anal sex from an infected man -- which is by far the most common sexual transmission route.

Actually it seems no-one here knows the current status of HIV in Thailand. The number with HIV is declining (about 0,7% of the population), and only 5,500 new cases are diagnosed a year (less than the UK). Prevalence of HIV in the sex trade is between 0,6% and 2.8% (highest for free-lancers).

Of course, all statistics in Thailand are suspect ........

The article is not claiming there is any sort of "inspection" system.

HIV testing is readily available in Thailand on request....for anyone.

The article is saying that some prostitutes get fake lab reports to show clients. This is true.

Some of the "labs" in touristy areas prominently advertising HIV/STD testing are complete fakes and don't conduct the actual tests. Not only can a prostitute readily get a false report from these but a tourist genuinely wanting a real test may be conned. Stick to hospitals and legit labs.

Well Sheryl, your comment in connection with posts 65/66/68 would be very welcome. Confirmation of the mathematics/statistics listed in those posts?
Thanks.

Been frequenting bars all over Pattaya/Naklua/Jomtien for 25 years. (Just back from a pleasant few hours in some now)

Girls health certicates? Is anyone stupid enough to believe they are actually genuine?? :((

When I first arrived here they cost 30 Baht. No tests done. No questions asked. Yes, I know that for a certain fact.

Cost more than 30 Baht now but hardly any are genuine.

Yes, I have known several girls in Pattaya, in years gone by, with "HIV free" certificates right up until it was obvious they weren't, go home and die from AIDS.

Now there are drugs that keep it under control, though it's not an easy thing to live with, they can continue to work in the bars/Beach road etc with HIV and you won't know it until you test positve yourself.

If you must stick anything into women (or men) who have sex with several sex tourists every day, some without condoms and anally, don't believe anything you are told about being tested, and protect yourself well.

I do know a couple of bars that test sometimes but 99% don't even if they say they do and anyway, even if the girls tested clean for anything yesterday what did the sex tourists they joined with last night squirt into them.

I read some years ago (don't ask for a link I can't remember where I read it) that even the Thai government admit one or two condoms out of ten sold here are ineffective, due to poor storage etc. I have no idea if this is still the case but it was then.

Best of luck.

Simon

Anyone having sex with a prossy without a condom is a moron. Even before HIV/AIDS there was herpes, syphilis etc etc etc.

In the book Virgin Soldiers there is a somewhat amusing description of "armouring up" before having sex with a Singaporean prossy, and that was set in the 50s or 60s.

More unsubstantiated, alarmist cobblers from another UK rag.

They probably thought it was time to write another unsubstantiated, alarmist cobbler piece about Pattaya. Those sort of articles seem to come out quite regularly in the UK gutter press.

True, though gonorrhoea would be a better example. Herpes and syphilis are typically spread through skin contact and condoms give only partial protection against these at best.
