This. I've said it before and I'll say it again, these campaigns aren't for funding anyone's treatment, they're for funding the family so they don't have to sell their cars, computers, expensive phones, etc. to take care of their own.

I too have said before that any parent of a gap-year student heading further than Bognor Regis should spend 50-100 quid on an annual insurance in the childs name and sit on it 'just in case'....even if the child doesnt know they've done it or has taken out a policy in their own right.

I'm sorry the lady is ill but I find it hard to have any sympathy for those who travel with no travel/health care package.

what would she do ?

Acc. to Daily Wail she came to take up a position as manager. Doesn't say managing what.

The story doesn't make sense as you don't arrive on visa exempt (which she did the D.Wail knows) and receive a w.p. 2 weeks later.

Good luck to her. I don't understand why Thai hospital should not be able to treat meningitis or encephalitis. Both aren't rare exotic infections. Dangerous yes if untreated.

you seem to be fixated spamming posting trolling this stuff day after day on thread after thread, what exactly is your agenda, may I suggest you create your own thread and see if anyone actually wants to discuss it

do you even live in Thailand ?

I suspect not

This girl is a tourist - she is not an expat - she was not living here - she was on holiday

She's been here 4 years.....

And I guess deliberately no mention of what this infection may be.

Maybe a scam.

When all said said and done..she should be in a normal Thai hospital.
As Sheryl always says..it's not thr hospital that matters..it is the quality of the doctor and his/her team that's important.

I have a problem that anyone would give money to these scammers.

On her IG..she appears to be suffering from anorexia.

No excuse to be travelling without travel insurance.  If you can't afford the insurance, you can't afford to travel.  Don't get caught up in the "It can't/won't happen to me" syndrome.

travel insurance is time limited, people on extended holidays (6+ months) may have started their trip with insurance but it expired after 3/6 months

So you go online and extend the coverage date. Takes all of 5 minutes.

Another broke Brit trying to play on hoping for generosity by the intellectually challenged.

If it said .....need money for a ticket home, be one thing, but 25,000 pounds.......comical

Medical evacuation is extremely expensive. And even if you have travelers insurance, they generally don't cover medical evacuation to any hospital of your choice. The kind of insurance a 20 something would be would only evacuate you to the nearest medical facility that can adequately treat your emergency. It could be a scam of course, but just as likely the Dad just doesn't have a lot of money and he's afraid his daughter is going to die, which is certainly a very real possibility with encephalitis or meningitis. It could very well be that a UK hospital isn't going to be able to provide any better treatment than the one in Phuket but if they are telling him it doesn't look like she'll make it or that she'll probably have brain damage you can forgive him for not thinking rationally. In any case, I think it is poor taste to label somebody who may way be flying home to England with his daughter's dead body in the future a "scammer" absent evidence. He's probably just scared and desperate.

Rather strange???
Mate of mine over here flew to the USA where he'll be for coupla months..then he's off to Oz for few months then back here.

Even if she had travel insurance, every short term policy I used to take out ( I since stopped taking them out) only paid by reimbursement to you after you filed/submitted the claim.  So even if you had insurance the money to you could be a long time in coming.  I never found a single one that would directly reimburse the Thai hospital.  I am from the USA.  I have heard that there are some international or UK offered travel insurance that might reimburse the hospitals directly, but I have no direct knowledge of that.

Quoted from gofundme.com page

This update is in response to some comments being made about Rebekah’s situation regarding insurance.

Rebekah has always been responsible and covered by insurance when travelling, and believe me I know, because I have paid for most of it.

Her current insurance became invalid recently due to her immigration status in Thailand as she has a NON-IMM visa with the right to work. I am led to believe that her work permit, which was due to be granted this week, would’ve entitled her to medical care in Thailand but sadly we were a week short.
Thanks James.

She took the gamble to travel without medical coverage, that's  unfortunate, just like some YouTube vloggers have and now are asking other people is pay for the mistake they made, trying to protect the assets they have by soliciting other peoples money, the dad in this case needs to step up and provide financial help, sale car, take a loan out, remortgage the house, my GOD this is your daughter.

I had a 12 month travel insurance policy that covered me for trips max duration 3 months, under special arrangements they would extend to 6 months

Yep, either he is understating the severity of his daughter's illness and not moving quickly?

one of the photos in the hyperlink looked like she had big scars on each hip.  Hip surgery at her age?  An accident?  Maybe they are tattoos?

Trying it on.

There is no evidence she needs to be flown home..
