Yet more delays in implementation of immigration's biometric system

Daily News reported that there are yet more delays in the start of Thai immigration's plan to introduce biometric technology. 

 

Systems in use in Australia, Germany and Singapore have been proposed for Thailand over the last two years. 

 

But there has been delay after delay in the implementation of the 2.1 billion baht plans that include better fingerprint and facial recognition technology. 

 

Now it looks like a final deadline on May 2nd will be unmet. 

 

A deputy charged with bringing in the new technology, Maj-Gen Surapong Chaijan, told the press that the private company installing the systems have asked for a further 110 day extension. 

 

This would be considered on Thursday along with plans to demand 5 million baht a day in compensation for the delays resulting from the breaking of the contract. 

 

Problems in implementing the scheme at Ubon Airport have been blamed. It is one of many airports where the technology would be used. 

 

Changes to the infrastructure at Ubon are simply not ready. 

 

Maj-Gen Surapong put a brave face on the latest delay saying that one way or another, one time or another the systems would be in place.

 

Daily News said that three past immigration chiefs had presided over the introduction of the technology that has now become the burden of the latest chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang. 

 

Biometric technology is hoped to be more accurate and secure than previous methods aiding in the immigration process and limiting the possibility of transnational crime.

I am sure someone is having a nice earner out of the attempts though.

Why are they screwing around with this? Staff the damn immigration desks at the airports first.

It'll be as high tech as the faulty railway crossings in Pratchuap.

  Not a lot can be done when those under contract fail to meet their target...hardly the fault of those who gave them the contract?

Just wait for the system to fall over like it did in Australia the other day. 
 

I hope the infrastructure is up to the job.

I suppose it depends on which branch of the army the CEO is from.

look at the problems when 90 day reporting went on line, using old technology, and some immigration offices did not want to know, they only knew the BIRO and paperwork route/. lol

That rather depends on the reasoning behind the contract offer. Was the best company chosen or the one who offered the biggest 

' incentive ' ?

Why would they they need to have this at Ubon ? Have they reintroduced international flights there, I thought the last international flights were during the Vietnam War.

Yeah, like the well-known code TM30 transnational crime of a bunch of old, barely mobile farang resident retirees leaving the country for a short holiday and not racing to immigration to report their whereabouts within 24 hours of arriving back in Thailand.

So what if Ubon Airport is not ready, install them at the others and then at Ubon when their systems have been upgraded.

Can't wait until they introduce driverless cars in Thailand

Seems there are already many cars that seem by there actions must be driverless.  Have travelled many countries and driven in most.  Never have I seen such incompetence and carelessness on the roads.  Stop signs, speed limit signs, what are they for?  Need to enforce existing laws, not create more to be ignored.

System goes down, Thailand refuses to process passengers. Leaves all and sundry on inno man's land.

 

Charges outbound passengers b500 and yells at them for overstay bc they refused to process while system is down.

 

Just wait for it...gets more complicated to live here by the day. In fact, IO haven't been solid on the law since forever.

They just haven't yet figured out how to scam the new system and cream some money off the top whilst making it look legit (fig leaf style).
