Buddhist monks are supposed to shun the luxuries of the world and live a humble life while in robes. 

 

Consequently netizens were up in arms when pictures of the lifestyle of one monk was revealed on Facebook.

 

He had a gorgeous room with all the trappings of a hi-so lifestyle, reported Sanook. 

 

There was a huge comfy bed, ample air-conditioning and a large Smart TV showing YouTube.

Not to mention the iPhone 8 he had for his personal use. 

 

Locals near Dan Sai in Loei province, however, said the pictures were taken in 2017 or thereabouts and featured a monk who had gone in for "jam phansaa".

 

This is the rainy season retreat when monks are forbidden unnecessary travel and especially urged to give up on any vices. 

 

He had since left the monkhood, they thought. 

 

Meanwhile Sanook reporters went to the temple of Wat Phonchai in Loei and requested an interview with the abbot. 

 

But Phra Siriratanamethi said he was too busy to talk - he had dozens of ordinations to do instead.

The 'netizens' should contact the “Temptation Removal” lady…. who helped the abbot in Pattaya cast aside his sinful ways and return to the path of righteousness. No doubt she'll be happy to straighten out a luxury-loving monk.

Many years ago I was invited to a (hiso) New Home ceremony,  monk arrived in a very new stretch Merc with police escort.

I tried praying for a new tablet but tripped over a paving slab so it sort of works????

Wat Pha Pong in Ubon is an exception, about the only real manifestation of anything like true Buddhism I have ever seen here. No silly statues of chickens, zebras and all the other nonsense, no soi dogs or half dead cats, spotlessly clean and only one collection box, and that was covered up. No hawkers, markets or fortune telling, no daft amulets on sale. They do have a wax effigy of the dead monk who founded the place though.

Used to go to a monk in the din deang area. A really nice calm guy and his cell was literally a cell. Bare except for a thin mattress on the floor.

His neighbour on the other hand; air con on 24/7, tinted windows, satellite tv, little fluffy dog etc

Like the days of catholicism when the clergy and church got vastly rich selling fake plenary indulgences and fake relics while breaking all the rules of the church as laid down by Jesus in the new testament. All religions sink into abominations, all it takes is time and a few insanely greedy clergymen. I cannot believe that 300 or more years after the enlightenment some people are still brainwashed into believing this nonsense. Shows the power of brainwashing and propaganda. The word 'propaganda' by the way derives from the Jesuits and referred to their practices of brainwashing the population. It was not a pejorative word at the time it was introduced, merely a word to describe the business practices of the Vatican.

I was a monk and i didnt have luxuries. Just a simple bed and a fan. 

I never begged or asked fir things. I just accepted what was given to me. 

Tv is not allowed by Theravada Buddhism rules because entertainment was forbidden.

Possibly the writers idea of a "gorgeous room" and mine are different, least they have left the worthless & meaningless sticker on the AC unit to show they really have some class ????

Same here.  I lived as a ordained monk for 7 years in Lopburi province.  A simple bed and a floor fan.  Both given to me by worshippers in a 12 by 12 concrete walled room with one ventilation window.

So you're assuming the Benz was owned by the monk, and he also arranged a conspicuous police escort? Interesting how people's minds can see things so differently. I'd assume that the Hi-SO homeowners arranged to have the monk picked up in such a manner to show their respect and gratitude.

Initially I thought your 'TV' reference was ThaiVisa, as there are a lot of posters who do make a song and dance regarding some subjects. Then I realised you probably meant television.

My Thai brother in law aged in his mid 50's became a monk a few years ago. He says it was because he never went when young but am pretty sure was to get over his raging alcoholism. I believe there are not many rehab opportunities other than the temples. He worked all his life and my wife's family are not short of money. I'd say he would have a nice TV phone etc in his room. I'm sure he goes and collects alms but I'm also sure his wife is a generous donors to the temple. I knew a Catholic priest on Australia who is very well known for his work with kids living on the street. One of his corporate donors was a big car dealer who thought it was funny to give the priest his new Mercedes convertible. He used to look great driving a bright yellow Merc with the roof down in his priest's clothing.
