As you can see on the above pics, the most often used programs are missing from the start menu.

How I can get them back?

Then right-click on the program link and choose "Pin to start menu"

Most often/frequently used programs on the start menu should be placed below the pinned listed programs.

My problem is that they disappear, and I looking for the way to bring them back.

Hopefully, there is some registry key that affect this.

Right click on the Start Menu and select Properties. Select Customize and you should see Number of Programs on Start Menu.

The number of programs was set to 12, then I changed it to 10... However, no links are listed there (in the Most Frequent Programs), as you can see in the "screen captures" in my initial post - the long white space below the "Outlook Express" and above the "All Programs".

P.S.

Beware! It could happened to you too, if you leave your child alone near the PC for a couple of munites.

Not likely this but should check just in case. Open a CMD window (use Run and type CMD). Enter 'gpedit.msc' without the quotes and check the line highlighted in the image below. It should be set to disabled or not configured.

Also did you clear the list just in case of an overflow?

This is the last thing I can think of at the moment. Assuming you checked the registry and made sure the entry listed above does not exist. Get a copy of TweakUI (part of microsoft's powertoys), run it and see if you can see a similar list as below.

Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees. You may be right Mid. I ran a test by clearing my list and opened a few applications and nothing showed in the list. When I ran some of my more common applications they did show up.

tywais, your were right on the money twice in this post:

1. the link to: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startmfu.htm

2. "...can't see the forest from the trees"

The same is true about myself...

I have repaired my Start Menu and brought the MFU list back by going to (registry key):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer

and disabling the "NoInstrumentation" (changing from 1 to 0).

After reboot, everything is OK.

Thank you all for the help.

Glad it all worked out for you. My knowledge base was running out of steam on this one. :o
