Jomtien's Black Sea: Sticking a plaster on a gaping wound!

Picture: Manager Onlne

A picture on the Manager site showed what the authorities had done so far to stop more repulsive black sludge from flowing into the sea.

Sandbags blocking a drain.

It amounted to sticking a plaster on a gaping wound, notes Thaivisa.

The authorities admitted there was much to be done to find a permanent solution to the problem that saw damning videos and still photography all over social media.

The Jomtien area was a black sea of sludge - a very unwelcome sight for any tourist considering holidaying in the area.

While an initial clean up has been done - and the hole has been plugged for now - the authorities in Jomtien and the wider area of Pattaya are wondering what exactly to do next.

It could be months before anything happens with millions needing to be spent.

Thaivisa further notes that the story is beset with recriminations and all manner of plans to rectify the situation.

Effluent and trash flowing directly into the sea has been the subject of continuing complaints in the area for years.

Let's see what water pressure can do and how long these sandbags will hold.

Someone probably got a bonus for his (not) superb idea !

To their credit, they did acknowledge the larger issue involved.

But still, would have been interesting to be sat at the conference table when this stop-gap solution was proposed and approved.  Wouldn't interfere, just want to observe the process.

I wonder how many meetings they had before they came to this very clever solution?

Those bags are filled with concrete. The guy who gave them to his workers has reportedly said 'that isn't really what I meant'......

More like sticking a cork up your backside than a plaster.

Hope they get the water "pristine" for the Triathlon this year.

Typical Pattaya - Jomtien way of doing things... do it the cheapest way and pocket the rest of the city’s municipal operation money.

Maybe a little more than the Pattaya sewerage workers

Monty Python comes to mind

Its not a sticking plaster that is needed.

Its Chemotherapy for the Cancer that runs the City.

The triathlon happen in Pattaya bay.

This weekend pollution was in a different large bay, more than 10 km South of this pic location, in an area depending of Sattahip.

Also currents of the Gulf of Thailand are going South in Pattaya area, so no way this pollution could have impacted Pattaya Bay.

Our Russian friends who choose to vacation in the QES area will be used to swimming in the Black sea although fortunately for them, the real Black Sea is a lot cleaner than the waters off Pattaya. Meanwhile the Pattaya powers that be have gone from effluent to affluent in a week.

Please call the Australians to help.

It’s only a matter of time before there is an outbreak of the Black Death.

Having lived here for years, the facade, otherwise known as the image, is all important. Sandbags give an impression of taking care of a problem, which in all likelyhood is is so large and corrupted, it is going to take a long time and several governments to correct. Meanwhile, tourist arrival numbers continue to increase and the happiness meter is off the scale.????
