I flunked at maths, but surely this has everything to do with the angle of the legs? A typical four legged chair with legs perpendicular to the floor would indeed be less stable than a three legged stool with legs angled outwards like in the photo. Apply a similar angle to the legs on the chair and you have considerably more stability than the stool. 

It took the nation five years to realize what most people already knew the day the coup was staged. Too bad they held a completely different view back then.
