There is a 14 year old child in a wheelchair just around the corner from my home.   Both parents are dead and the kid is being looked after by an aunty who appears to have done a pretty good job so far.

Up till now the kid has been able to go to school at a place that is a few minutes’ walk from where they live so Aunty has been able to take the kid to and from school.  The problem now is that the kid needs to go to a different school that is further away and so will need special transport.   The foster parents (aunty) can’t afford this.   One day while shopping the aunty asked my wife if we could give the kid a job for a few hours a week and we got to talking.    I am thinking that perhaps we could sponsor the kids transport and some special needs stuff and get her back into school.   My problem is that I can’t find any English speaking organisations that can point me in the right direction to start getting this organised.

If anyone here could offer some suggestions for English speaking support groups for wheelchair bound kids I would be grateful.

I am not at all sure if the below article is helpful but there are also normal taxis that can transport people in wheelchairs. I suppose the Aunty cannot afford the cost of a taxi to and from school?

The PR Department of the BMA tweeted this afternoon that on the 5th December they will be launching a new taxi service for the disabled and elderly people of Bangkok. There will be ten specially adapted taxis taking part in this scheme. There will be enough room for two wheelchairs and two passengers. The service is offered for 18 hours per day from 6 a.m. to midnight. Taxis can be booked in advance by calling 1555. Booking fee is 30 Baht and meter fee is as normal. According to the BMA there are 60,000 wheelchair users in Bangkok. 16,000 are disabled and 48,000 are elderly.

There are associations that support the disabled. Not sure about English speaking though.

My son is also 14 and disabled and uses a wheel chair.

My wife was a speaker at some event years ago here, joint with an Aussie association. That was an English speaking event so maybe.

I'll ask her later for you.

There are a number of organisations but they appear to be more like boarding facilities i.e. kids live there. The places are in Pakkret, Ladkrabang. There may be others more centrally lpcated.

Whereabout in Bkk area lives the child you mention?

Yes, it would be helpful to know the district, if not the exact locality.

Thanks to all who offered advice.   The kid is now back at school and the transport problem resolved.
