PATTAYA TRANSFORMED: City Hall to spend 70 million baht on adviser/designer team for state of the art tram project

Pattaya Watchdog reported on Thursday that Pattaya City Hall is planning on spending 70 million baht in advisory and design work on the proposed tram project that is set to transform the popular resort.

This comes after reports earlier in the week suggested that two companies were in line for the tender to build the city's light train (tram) network.

They have also scotched suggestions of an elevated train saying the plan is for one at ground level.

Pattaya Watchdog also showed what such a tram might look like and suggested proposed routes.

They said that initially the Red Line would not connect with the high speed three airport line (Don Muang - Suvarnabhumi - U-Tapao - that will pass near Pattaya.

But nothing is sure yet, that is the only certainty.

They suggested that 8 billion baht will be spent on the Red Line that would run in a loop from South Pattaya pier.

It would take in stops on Sukhumvit Road, North Pattaya, City Hall, Terminal 21, Central, and Royal Garden.

A Blue line that will be longer and cost 12 billion baht is still in the offing.

Billions more will be spent on environmental impact assessments.

Pattaya Watchdog dismissed suggestions that the tram will be an elevated or monorail network.

They suggested that the plan will be to use existing roads.

The trams are part of huge Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) budgets to develop Pattaya and other areas of the Eastern Seaboard.

If given the go-ahead the new rail network is set to transform Pattaya and further enhance the resort's standing as a world class destination for both domestic and international tourism.

I hope they make Rayong part of the route.

Just what Pattaya needs. More congestion on the streets. Think about getting rid of all the busses, songtews and taxis that travel around downtown.

And of course like everything else here, how long will it need to get from state of the art to derelict?

Is that Khao Yai in the background? Looks like Diamond Head in Hawaii to me, or are they contemplating turning the world class resort into a Hawaii theme park?

This is Thailand, when have they ever cared about "environmental impacts" on anything.(unless they can make money from it,ie cigarette butts = 20000 baht fine)

I like the Baht Busses more. You (still) can get on and off where you want. And there are plenty of them. Don't want to wait for a tram.

This is just a few guys retirement pot

Lots of fanfare, money wildly thrown about, 3 years on and nothing to be shown for the 70mill

I could be wrong but I have my doubts........

Absolutely absurd design. As long as baht buses are available people will use them because they are too lazy to walk to and from a tram station. If the tram cost more than 10 baht it is doomed from the start. Streets in the design are already small and just not big enough to handle a surface tram system.

A surface tram can only work where people obey the law and give right of way. No one will not give right of way to a tram in "me first" Thailand. Trams be slow because they will move at the speed of even more congested traffic.

The blue line is a horrible route. It can easily take 10 minutes to get through the Big C Pattaya Klang traffic light now. How can a surface tram possibly work.
Only one switch station? That makes it useless for people in South Pattaya to use the blue line.

An elevated tram will still take some on the very limited roadway but at least it will be a lot faster travel time.

It will take years to build so there will be total kaos for an extended time.

Start by banning the "Chinese" buses transporting people around town. No bus parking permitted on ANY Pattaya street. Limit/reduce the number of baht buses and require new ones to be larger to hold about 24 people jeepney style. Better yet screw the baht bus mafia and use real buses and forget the tram.

You have to wait for a baht bus when going home after a night out. Never used to be the case. They are also unsuitable for older people with mobility issues. They cause most of the traffic jams around town too, stopping wherever they please. Something needs to be done wrt the traffic problems although I don't see this as a fix.

Well if they spend a zillion baht on the tram system and if people get tired of waiting 15-20 min for the next tram to come around they will just grab a baht bus....

The empty trams will cause the city to lose face....Which will cause them to ban baht buses to force people to use trams.....

Trams run slooow......Baht buses run fast......

Beach and 2nd road already has loads of baht buses...

It looks like from the picture the tram would go right down walking street? How could that work?

A slow moving tram might come in handy for checking out the talent on beach road....

Do they heck. Not a lot faster than walking on Soi Buakhao or Beach Rd.

What a marvelous and innovative idea. Visitors to the world’s premier family holiday destination can safely observe Pattaya’s friendly and picturesque wildlife in their native habitat.

Temptation to roll out the old joke is just too much

"What is Pattaya like?"

"It's like Blackpool but he rides are better"

Sorry, will there be illuminations to extend the high season?

LOL...

Try walking Soi Bukow and then take a Baht Bus and tell us which one is faster....

Looks like a good idea but the road is only so big.will be crowded if it all happens.something will have to give somewhere

No, a Firework festival, followed by a bikini race, then a music festival,

Probably the complete and utter lack of pavement gives the Baht bus a slight edge, but from Hellfire junction to Tree town, foot is way faster. Baht buses a waste of space there.

Do you really think that the songtaw and taxi drivers are going to take this lying down?   Well, they might by lying across the tracks.

Please.......A slow-moving tram is no competition to fast-moving baht buses..
