‘Energy cards’ carry 350 times more radiation than humans can bear

THE OFFICE of Atoms for Peace (OAP) has warned of excessively high levels of radiation from the so-called “energy cards” that their distributors claim can cure illnesses and help relieve aches and pains.

 

Tests on sample cards conducted by the state agency found radiation measuring at 40 microsieverts per hour, which is 350 times higher than the maximum exposure humans should get to radiation a year.

 

The agency also warned against drinking water in which an “energy card” has been dipped, as doing so raises the risk of cancer. It said OAP would take legal action against the distributors once it has gathered enough evidence from its tests on the cards.

 

So far, tests have revealed that the cards contain radioactive metallic elements of uranium and thorium, as well as their “radionuclide” or radioactive isotope. X-rays showed nothing inside the cards.

 

The OAP warning came in the wake of media reports saying that many villagers in the Northeast had been tricked into buying these so-called energy cards from distributors, who made money from both selling the cards and recruiting new distributors as part of what appears to be a “pyramid scheme”. 

The cards are being sold at Bt1,100 to Bt1,500 each.

 

Far-fetched claims

 

The distributors claim these cards can improve the immune system, strengthen the heart and energise the user’s metabolism. The also claim the card can purify water if it is briefly soaked in it. 

 

OAP has advised against being exposed to the card or products that contain radioactive elements. “Using such products bring you no benefits and it’s not worth the price. Also, you may be unnecessarily exposed to excessive radiation,” it said.

 

The agency also said that anyone who wants to discard these cards can contact the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology for assistance.

 

Ampai Sukbampoeng, manager of the institute’s Irradiation Centre, said yesterday that if the cards are disposed of improperly, they could easily contaminate the environment, as well as crops. 

 

He suggested that local officials should collect these “energy cards” from villagers and send them to his agency for proper disposal.

I imagine OAP's in Thailand are more likely to starve to death due to poor pensions that radioactivity

A group of well known Doctors advised,  exposure to the card can be relieved by a dose of farm chemicals. 

This is highly disturbing

I found that by placing mine in the centre of the room and doing a ramwong around it 3 times in a counter clockwise direction it works a treat....no more pain!

If it is that much danger in the cards, that will ultimately result in mass murder. Are they going to charge the sellers and creators of the cards on basis of that?

If not for the radiation this would just be an alternative medicine story like any other.  Earlier stories, apparently written before the cards were tested, said that villagers experienced all sorts of health benefits from those cards, with many people claiming they cured chronic pain.

Looks perfectly legal to vape one????

Uranium and thorium are natural elements and a very weak source of radioactivity. The values measured are imo overrated. In small quantities they should be close to harmless.

Maybe these people should be watching HBO's 'Chernobyl' so they can see just how awful radiation sickness is. While they're at it - they can also see how utterly ridiculous and backwards it is living under socialist authoritarian rule.

The annual limit / dosage for an adult is reported in the above article as being 1 mSv per year.

The average annual dosage of radiation per year in the US is reported as being 3.7 mSv.

 

 

which works out at 0.000422374 mSv per hour...

The cards are reported to emit 40 mSv per hour.

 

The cards are not 40x more radio active, they are 94,703 x (nearly One Hundred Thousand times) more radioactive than the recommended maximum exposure to humans.

 

1 adult chest X-ray is 0.1 mSv

1 adult chest CT scan is 4-7 mSv

Talking about national security... How about this bunch of useless clowns stop wasting theirs and ours time on idiotic reporting procedures and find out how radioactive materials are being spread across the country so easily.

Hope they treat this case like the China melamine scandal. Death penalty to the makers and life in prison for the marketers.

wait a minute. where the hell and why would someone selling fake scam health cards get uranium and thorium? This sounds like BS to me or a state actor is involved. Why did they test the cards for radioactivity in the first place? That does not sound like something Thailand would do unless they got some sort of tip about this.

On that note, I suggest the Thai-Elite visa holders check their Privilege Membership Cards, maybe there is a new plot to prevent them from staying here for the whole 20 years...  ????

That's a good point.  Maybe it's just a scare tactic.  If they just told people that the cards are a scam they would probably still buy them, but tell them that they are radioactive and that's going to end the scam once and for all.
