Cambodian Woman Who Collected Garbage as a Child Gets Full Scholarship to University of Melbourne

A young lady who toiled as a child at a garbage dump in Cambodia will soon attend the University of Melbourne on a full scholarship.

 

At 11, Sophy Ron had never attended school, having to work at the Stung Meanchey Municipal Waste Dump in Phnom Penh — a landfill covering some 100 acres (40 hectares) — to help support her family.

 

One fortunate day, she was found by the Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF), a nonprofit committed to transforming the country’s “most impoverished kids into tomorrow’s leaders.” With the help of the organization, Ron managed to study at Trinity College at the University of Melbourne, where she graduated as valedictorian last month.

As a foreign student, there would have been upfront fees same as for other foreign students.

These are designated places for overseas students, not keeping anyone out 

Someone or some organisation paid.

If there were no foreign students, all the places would be for locals.

Or do you think they'd just take less students?

Great story, all the best for her!   CCF is a great organization, doing great things in Cambodia, I learned about them a couple of years ago watching a story on them.

And I am more than happy that this happens. 

 

I dont want a world where the poor have no way out. Giving something to those less fortunate is a humane way society should operate.

 

im sure anyone missing out will find somewhere to go or study better.

She's probably a heckuva lot more deserving of the place than most "of yours". And when she goes on to do great things and becomes one "of yours" herself you get to be deservedly proud "of yours", instead of being a lout about one "of theirs".
