A passenger van driver and nine passengers have been injured after the vehicle careered off the Asian Highway in Songkhla around lunchtime today.

When emergency responders arrived they found the van driver unconscious behind the wheel. All nine passengers had been injured. Three of them, one with a broken arm, were taken to the Narakin Hospital.

The incident happened just after 12.30pm as the van was carrying nine passengers from the Provincial capital Hat Yai’s bus terminal to a cave in the Sabayoi district.

Passengers have told police that as they got close the van suddenly veered into the roadside ditch saying they believe the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Totally understandable. Everyday I see people on lunch break, falling asleep in all different positions immediately after the last spoon of rice. it´s a part of the culture.

Isn’t it time for tachographs to be fitted to all trucks and passenger coaches and vans? Don’t say lack of money as they can all afford high end stereo and video systems. Make Land Transport Dept inspect for compliance, give them something positive to do.

As always, the characters that should be responsible for other people's lives are absolutely irresponsible!
They fall asleep while driving, are drunk or drugged or just dumb!
Take special driving tests as it is used in other countries and do more frequent and accurate checks!

On trains in the UK, an alarm sounds in the driver's cab every time the train approaches a signal to ensure he/she takes notice. In Singapore, they used to and maybe still do have a bell chime if the driver exceeds the speed limit. How about vehicles in Thailand having an alarm that sounds every minute of so to wake up the driver?

I've travelled in many vehicles outside Thailand where there is an audible alarm if the driver exceeds the speed limit. I've always assumed the feature exists but is disabled in Thai vehicles
