Relatives of pro-democracy protesters killed in the May 1992 military crackdown have given the authorities an ultimatum, demanding that the culprits behind last Friday’s attack on political activist Sirawit Serithiwat be arrested within seven days.

“If there is no development within seven days, you can’t stop the consequences – I am not threatening,” said Adul Khiewboriboon, chairman of the Relative Committee of May 1992 Heroes.

Adul said on Sunday intelligence he had received indicated that junior military officers had attacked Sirawit to please their superior.

Their superior was currently overseas, Adul said, citing “in-depth” information he’d obtained.

But the soldiers were neither subordinates of Royal Thai Army commander-in-chief General Apirat Kongsompong nor Army troops, he said.

Security officials must know who was behind the attack, he added. “And the government has to give the public answers and try to catch the perpetrators.”

Sirawit – known in the media as “Ja New”, meaning Sergeant New – was attacked by four men near his home at about noon last Friday.

The assailants arrived on two motorcycles, wore crash helmets and wielded sticks. His injuries included a broken nose and fractured eye socket.

Payao Akkahad, whose daughter was killed during the red-shirt protests in 2010, said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had to be held responsible for the attack on Sirawit.

“The government has to take the responsibility,” she said. “Incidents like this must not happen to anyone who disagrees with the government. Arrests must be made within a week.”

The Defence Ministry on Sunday dismissed allegations that security officials were stalling the investigation.

Ministry spokesman Lt-General Kongcheep Tantrawanit said General Prawit Wongsuwan, deputy prime minister and defence minister in charge of security affairs, had instructed the police to expedite their investigation and find the culprits as soon as possible.

Prawit had expressed sorrow over the attack on the activist, the spokesman said, adding that government policy forbids such violence.

Police and other security officials had been instructed to increase measures to protect activists, Kongcheep said.

But he urged citizens not to hold Sirawit up as a “political victim” with the aim of gaining political advantage.

so somebody, with a grudge to his superior, spilled the beans. Must be a cruel superior, if hated that much.

To conduct this beating there might be many people involved - like stalkers, people listening to bug devices and looking at screens for most of the day. So more than one team of 4 soldiers.

This was exact timing, a day before an event commemorating 1932 revolution, which Ja New was co-organising.

the government knows, who did it, because they are spying on opposition round the clock and by many means.

If he could tell now, what country?

is their superior now holidaying in switzerland?

Looks like the people had enough of the criminals running this country and especially the army.
What a sad and pathetic country this is becoming.
What’s next? A Hitler style SA intimidating, beating and murdering opponents! Oh I just realized we have that already here!
These people need to go and as soon as possible!

Agreed. But as I have just written on the other related thread, the masses are not going to back anyone and without that words are empty. The media might say the people are fed up with it but look out of the window, in the towns, in the villages...what do you see? Apathy? Mai pen rai na.

Better this way than putting themselves in harm's way and lose a loved one. This army will mow down any resistance to their rule. I sincerely wish that there will be no violent resistance that will harm and the country but of course nothing can guarantee that this may not happen. Just need a good trigger point. The best way is to wait for the next election and vote those corrupt vote stealing wannabe leaders and politicians out. The demographic change will play a key role. Every year there are 700,000-800,000 new young voters and FFP seem their standard bearer for change. The current leaders and politicians will be too old and slow to respond to this new demography and their exit is imminent. By then all the political parties will learn from this rigged election and will adapt themselves better for the next election which will come in less than 4 years.

You are right - the frightening thing though is that people are very frustrated and angry inside - combined with the mismanagement of the country and downturn of the economy the day will come when they say enough is enough. For now they have nobody who leads them - but if somebody steps up and exploits that anger and when finally the right spark flies and the situation explodes it might get nastier than all of us expect!

I wish you were right but I don't think it will turn out that way. One way or another the junta intend to hold on and they are already, metaphorically speaking, mowing the public down. On the other thread I mention the peaceful action of mass, and it has to millions, signatures of a petition to show the government what they really think of them...it won't happen. They just can't be bothered...Mai pen rai....Some things are worth standing up and years ago I did it...if not for oneself, for one's children.

Yes, there's no Hong Kong fever here because Napoleon's dogs are baying for blood. They will use protecting the Monarchy as their excuse and unfortunately the monarch that loved the people has passed on.

"Or else" - "We do absolutely nothing at all". As usual.

all the names will be publicly disclosed.

and the government can't easy kill those in possession of the list

so today is the last day of ultimatum.

names of attackers are already know, also to authorities.

the only explanation, why the government doesn't arrest them, that their commander is abroad (the one, who was holidaying in switzerland the last week and who is now on a shopping spree in london).

Keep calm don't do anything until after democracy is returned.

Is that a natural return or are you dreaming?

Well it sounds like it to me.  What are the consequences?  Will he scream and scream until he makes himself sick?  I bet the authorities can't sleep at night worrying what he has planned.
