Trump says immigration raids coming 'fairly soon'

(Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Friday mass deportation roundups would begin "fairly soon" as U.S. migrant advocates vowed their communities would be "ready" when immigration officers come.

Trump, who has made a hardline immigration stance a key issue of his presidency and 2020 re-election bid, postponed the operation last month after the date was leaked, but on Monday he said it would take place after July 4.

"They'll be starting fairly soon, but I don't call them raids, we're removing people, all of these people who have come in over the years illegally," he told reporters at the White House on Friday.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last month said operations would target recently-arrived undocumented migrants in a bid to discourage a surge of Central American families at the southwest border.

ICE said in a statement its focus was arresting people with criminal histories but any immigrant found in violation of U.S. laws was subject to arrest.

Government documents published this week by migrant rights groups showed some past ICE operations resulted in more so-called "collateral" arrests of undocumented migrants agents happened to find, than apprehensions of targeted people.

Migrant rights groups said this generalized threat is harmful to communities, and the U.S. economy, as it forces adults to miss work and children to skip school out of fear they may be picked up and separated.

"We have to be ready, not just when Trump announces it, because there are arrests every day," said Elsa Lopez, an organizer for Somos Un Pueblo Unido, a New Mexico group which educates migrants on their civil rights and creates phone networks to send alerts if ICE enters their neighborhood.

The threatened raids come after migrant apprehensions on the southwest border hit a 13-year high in May before easing in June as Mexico increased immigration enforcement.

A rising number of migrants are coming from outside Central America, including India, Cuba and African countries. The Del Rio, Texas, Border Patrol sector on Friday reported the arrest of over 1,000 Haitians since June 10.

Democratic lawmakers visited an El Paso, Texas, Border Patrol station on Monday and said migrants were being held in "horrifying" conditions, with women told to drink out of a toilet.

To "dispel" what he called "the misinformation," Chief Border Patrol Agent Roy Villareal put out a video showing fresh water available from a cooler and a faucet in a cell at a Tucson, Arizona, sector migrant processing center.

"We're not forcing aliens to drink out of the toilet," said Villareal, head of an area that in May apprehended nearly six times fewer people than the El Paso sector, a stretch of border that has borne the brunt of the migrant surge.

Gotta love this, you shouldn't arrest me just because I'm an illegal immigrant if it wasn't me you were looking for, otherwise I might not be able to work illegally.

Selective, skilled immigration is very useful to a country's economy. Uncontrolled is not. I guess the US is fortunate in some respects as the threat is from illegals with some similarities culturally. Other places, Australia included were being invaded by a completely alien culture and it had to be stopped. However should a change of Government occur and a left leaning crew take charge then it will be business as usual for the people smugglers in Indonesia.

Before the knockers start, Australia, per head of population, takes in more genuine refugees than most countries and has a robust skilled immigration program.

You are absolutely correct.  I favor the wall, however 50% off all the illegals in the USA come from people who come with valid, Tourist, Work, or Education Visa's and then just don't leave.  The wall won't stop them, nor will it ever stop 100% of people illegally crossing.  However if the USA would do the following: 1. Fine Employers for hiring illegals and put those who are repeat offenders in jail . Make it mandatory that all pay must be done by direct deposit in order to be tax deductible. 3. Just like in Thailand, an illegal can not open a bank account, cash a check, or arrange a wire transfer. 4. Just like in Thailand, an illegal can not get a drivers license 5. Without property documentation you can not rent a hotel room, an apartment of purchase a home.  If a person can not get a job, get his/her pay, cant find a place to live, they will self deport.

Or continue to live under the radar as they currently do in both countries.

Threat? Is the US economy doing poorly? Aren't the vast majority of illegal immigrants working? The agricultural industry would collapse without them.

I can't answer either of those questions with any authority. Australia has a very good visa system whereby people under 30 years of age can get a 12 month working visa, with conditions related to how long they can stay with an employer. I have met many people doing this. Work for a few months, party it up in the tourist areas and find another job. Most of this work is done on farms as the Ozzie welfare system discourages nationals to seek work there. The visitors are happy, the farmers are happy and the dole bludgers are happy. Win, win, win for all concerned. The Government also gets paid tax from their incomes.

Perhaps the US should consider something like this

No, it's not. That big, beautiful wall that Mexico was gonna pay for is not under construction and never will be unless Mexico finally says "Enough is enough! " and seals off the border from those crazy gringos.

The moron forgot that it's not enough to open his big mouth in order to get things done. So he had to postpone it (indefinitely?) because he found out that he had no means to conduct massive raids.

"Fairly soon", lol! It reminds me the last time I said I will get an erection fairly soon! ????

We are a couple days away from the two week deadline now. Hopefully Trump comes through this time. The 4th of July display genuinely seems to have inspired him to get back to work for the American people. His press conference the other day sounded like campaign version of Trump was back. All we have to do to get rid of the illegals is start enforcing the law. President Eisenhower was able to eject over 1,000,000 illegals in his best year as President. If Trump can match that from now until next summer he will be a shoe in for re-election.

The short-lived operation used military-style tactics to remove Mexican immigrants—some of them American citizens—from the United States. Though millions of Mexicans had legally entered the country through joint immigration programs in the first half of the 20th century, Operation Wetback was designed to send them back to Mexico.

With the help of the Mexican government, which sought the return of Mexican nationals to alleviate a labor shortage, Border Patrol agents and local officials used military techniques and engaged in a coordinated, tactical operation to remove the immigrants.

I think it's significant that Trump supporters consistently cite Thailand as a model of good governance.
