NCCC members answerable to law like everybody else: Supreme Court

In a landmark decision on Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that members of the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) will be held liable for any illegal acts committed, a high-ranking source at the Justice Ministry said.

At a rare Grand Meeting held recently, Supreme Court judges voted 141:28 on the edict that NCCC members will no longer be immune to lawsuits lodged by members of the public and that they are obliged to follow the country’s civil and criminal codes.

As an independent agency, like the Ombudsman’s Office and the Election Commission, the NCCC has been inevitably linked to politics, because its rulings affect state officials and politicians and can therefore be used as tools among political rivals.

For instance, NCCC’s transparency and impartiality came up for questioning when it failed to rule on the case of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan’s collection of luxury watches. Little has been done about the case despite severe criticism from the public and media.

The decision to hold the meeting stemmed from a dispute in the three-member quorum of judges on whether the NCCC commissioners should remain untouchable. The quorum chief reportedly thought so, though the other two disagreed.

This later turned into an internal discussion at the Supreme Court, leading to Supreme Court president Cheep Jullamon calling for the Grand Meeting to resolve the issue.

It probably just means "up size me" lunch boxes as there will be more tracks to cover.

None. All

Sort of like what's the answer to 0-0=? But here might be one or two if public has an outcry. Kind of like taking it for the team.

So how many will be thrown under the bus? And how many will be exonerated?

You have to know how many Army Generals work there, before you work out that calculation!! 555 ????????????????

The fact that the ruling has been changed is a positive in my

opinion , clearly someone above not happy with what has been happening.

I think that the real news here is that Thailand has 169!!! Supreme Court judges!

Why on Earth do they need so many?

So that when some of their mates end up in court they will be there to let them off?Maybe they like to share the work load with so many corruption cases to be heard.

America has 330 million people and 9 Supreme Court Judges so you would think no more than 9 would would be sufficient for Thailand.

For those curious as to why/how PPRP managed to secure 15-20% of the vote (yes, there was obvious cheating to get their number up over the 20% mark) - the votes came mostly from those who benefit from the current status quo - a bloated bureaucracy receiving above market rate salaries and perks.

Words, words, words - and empty words at that.

The mismatch between official Thailand's duplicitous, hypocritical rhetoric and the reality of this place is staggering - and it ain't going to change any time soon!

Yeah right!

This comes from a journal that extracted the following from an editorial in a national newspaper.

"The NACC (NCCC) is a fake anti-corruption agency. It works as the junta demands. It ignores cases the junta wants ignored. As the Post points out, The anti-corruption drive is compromised:

One of the first high-ranking people to be accused of corruption was a four-star army general. But Gen Preecha Chan-o-cha [Prayuth’s brother] was never prosecuted. Former army chief and former deputy defence minister, Gen Udomdej Sitabutr [a Prayuth supporter], was responsible for the construction of the extremely controversial Rajabhakti Park but there were no consequences"

"The Post recognizes that the NACC is a puppet institution, observing:

Pol Gen Watcharapol’s NACC decided not to pursue blatant, obvious and even admitted nepotism by many members of the junta-appointed National Legislative Assembly".
