BANGKOK, 25th July 2019 (NNT) -The Prime Minister has ordered security agencies to enhance protection level and provide compensation to victims of a recent attack in Pattani.

The Ministry of Defence’s Deputy Spokesman Col Patchasak Patirupanon, announced today that the Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has expressed condolences to families of victims from a recent attack by perpetrators of violence against a protective force base in Paka Harang subdistrict, Pattani, causing injuries and deaths among military personnel and volunteers.

In wake of the attack, the Prime Minister has ordered the military, the police, administrative agencies, and intelligence units in the southern region to be on high alert and closely follow any movements of persons of interest, enhance violence prevention measures in their respective areas, and track down those responsible for the violence and all cells involved with the attack for prosecution.

Members of the general public are advised to remain calm and continue with their daily life, while at the same time remaining vigilant to any suspicious items or persons, which should be reported immediately to security officials.

The Prime Minister and Minister of Defence has ordered Internal Security Operations Command 4 (Forward Command) and related agencies to provide assistance to victims of the attack and the families of those who lost their life, and to provide moral support to all security officials to continue working with tolerance and devotion. He has also insisted the government will continue pursuing peace negotiations for long-term orderliness and peacefulness in the lives of villagers.

While I send my sympathies to the victims my comment is nor primarily about that. It's about how the compensation etc. are announced.

'The Prime Minister has ordered security agencies to enhance protection level and provide compensation to victims of a recent attack in Pattani.' The headline indicates or seems to imply that the PM is still giving orders and not as a result of government or parlimentary debate/agreement.

'In wake of the attack, the Prime Minister has ordered the military, the police, administrative agencies, and intelligence units....'

'The Prime Minister and Minister of Defence has ordered Internal Security Operations Command 4 (Forward Command)...'

Ordered! Ordered! Perhaps I am wrong and other comments may correct me but it would appear to me that the PM is still acting like a chief of the former junta. Even the spokesman of MoD is has an army rank.

You do understand that PM Prayut is now also the Minister of Defense?

The Minister of Defense has been typically (maybe always-I didn't check) an Army General and has command of ISOC. While NCPO has been dissolved, Prayut's State of Emergency continues to exist in the southern provinces that effectively gives Prayut Article 44-styled control over the southern provinces.

So yes, hard to discern any difference in the Thai government before the March 2019 election and afterwards as related to the southern provinces.

The continuation of a pro-military government led by the former junta leader may have itself given cause for the recent spike in insurgency violence.

Yes, the OP did explain about the PM's position(s). I didn't make any background checks for and who DDM were and I didn't know so thanks for the info. It will be interesting to see if issues any other 'orders' that are outside his defence role.
