i've heard its overrun by Chinese tourists, casinos and mafia but i've seen a couple of youtube videos (with no commentary) that seem to have some nice quiet beaches and some good farang style pubs with nice khamer girls playing pool etc.

any thoughts on the place for a single guy visit for a week or so?

Unless you. are a Chinese gambler, not for you.

No nice beaches - raw sewage runs into the water off the casinos

no bars catering to Westerners left. Likely these were old videos you saw.

Was there 10 years ago. Kinda quiet.

White girls were working behind bar off their heads on drugs. Probably working for booze n pills.

The local LTs were $15 and no bar fines.

shame. so if you want something like a thai beach location like phuket or samui, one of the islands then?

I'm not up to date on what is happening on the various islands. I know one is entangled in disputes between developers. Do some research.

At best won't be anything like Phuket or Samui though. Some years back, the islands had very nice clean beaches and maybe some still do but never a lot of bars etc, not that much developed.

Read the long-running thread on Cambodia Expats Online on S'ville. It's been destroyed. The photos portray massive stinking garbage piles, open sewage runoff, Chinese signs everywhere, no-go zones for non-Chinese, noise and dust from unregulated construction and Khmer and foreigner-owned restaurants and businesses bought out by Chinese for their own kind. Hundreds of expats have left for Phnom Penh, Kampot and Vietnam.

This is indeed very sad.

Other options for a Cambodia beach holiday that still haven't been ruined or become Chinese owned are Koh Kong (the city near the border and the island). Do note that there is a Chinese casino resort project inside the Koh Kong national park, about 100km by road from Koh Kong currently under construction and the subject of international controversy as the US has accused Cambodia of potentially harboring a Chinese military base there.

Kampot is another good option, otherwise, Vietnam. Indeed Vietnam is much better beach-wise than anything in Cambodia.
