The sea lion got caught out as it competed with the whale for food. Pics: Magnus News Agency/ Chase Dekker

Incredible photographs of a sea lion being swallowed whole by a humpback whale have been captured in what's claimed to be a world first.

The sea lion - estimated to weigh around 28st (400lbs) - is seen being engulfed by the whale's jaws off Monterey Bay in California.

Humpbacks hunt with their huge mouths agape, swallowing fish as they go and filtering up to 500 gallons (1,892 litres) of water.

Three of the whales were feeding alongside around 200 sea lions when the unlucky creature got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Oh come on, that's completely intentional.   Exact same thing happened to Jonah.

What a misleading headline. The seal wasn't swallowed at all. It just had a temporary excursion into the whales mouth.

Sighed, sealed and delivered

Maui Ocean Center:

the opening at the back of the throat is about the size of a grapefruit, which means that a humpback whale would still have a hard time swallowing a large fish

I'm betting the sea lion escaped thru the open mouth under water, pushed out by the whale's tongue.

I knew a lady on Soi Buakhow who could do that.

Don't they all ?

What is the point? Oh, I know. It gives a springboard for the keyboard boozers to type something clever.

A humpback's throat is relatively small - about as wide as a watermelon - so the sea lion survived the encounter
