Good luck to you. Thailand is not for everybody and yes, it changed slightly since 1973. But I think it's funny when you write about going to the USA and civility and common sense. 555. Did

I think the bigger part is what people define as a bad situation. I.e. I don't care about the TM forms which have to be filled out from time to time. For me it's a little work and no problem. But

Order, structure, efficiency none of those traits were evident in the US war with Vietnam, but you went?

Best of luck back in New England.

Happy for you that you managed to get out of Thai Dodge while it's still easy, before you became too committed.

Do you like fried whole belly clams?

Thailand is never going to suit everyone. Coming here with a military mindset of order, a wife, and relationship obligations back in the US were factors which were always going to make adaptation to living here very difficult.

Ten years here now, and counting. Currently I'm in Melbourne freezing my nuts off, waiting to get back to a warm climate, and my Thai GF. Not to mention food which doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Personally, coming to Thailand has been one of my better life decisions.

You don't have to be in Thailand to post unless there is no internet in Boston or Trump is using all the bandwidth in his next covfefe????

This is not a dig at OP but a general observation .

Americans in my experience do seem to struggle anywhere they go expecting and wanting for everything to be their way and their way only .

it does not limit to general day to day stuff but even business dealings . They seem to expect for everyone to bent over backwards and do how Americans do it and if someone does not then they are stupid.

i have recently had my second encounter with the same American wanting to buy business . First time I just told him where to go from the start, this time he seemed more humble so i decided to waste my time with him. Not only I told him things are done differently here but gave him references to law firms and brokers sites showing step by step process only to be told it all Bs and he knows better and it’s done same as in America.

I guess what I am trying to say is some people from some cultures can , try and do assimilate into a new culture and some want other culture to change for them.

What is your nationality?

555! I left because of Trump, believe me, I’m not looking forward to the noise in that regard again. I was referring to American order, structure, efficiency. I am a military person and those things are important to me and are sorely lacking here.

quite surprised you didn't like Thailand, if you are a military person that would fit perfectly here with Prayut as the military ruler/boss

I love Thailand for all the reasons you  seem to hate.

if you rethink retiring in thailand, put 800,000 baht in the bank and don't live in CM.

don't try to force someone else's culture to conform to your own, especially if you are from the USA.

Have fun walking around Lowe's for the rest of your life. Say hi to ATT  for me.

All the way around this is such a sad story.

Mostly of course for the family health issues, and all the best to the OP with that. Not gonna be easy.  But also sad to leave with such negative feelings about Thailand when really the short time here was just not enough to make the adjustment in mindset etc - even if he wanted too.

But on a positive note at least he wont be mentally blaming the family for having to leave somewhere  where he felt really happy. On the contrary.

Better to go easily, with good grace than bemoan fings aint wot they used to be. Not new news surely

A medical system that literally can cost an arm and a leg.

A legal system so complex 1 in 10 people in Washington is a lawyer.

Probably the only place in the world where prostitution is illegal, but filming sex for profit is not.

Incarceration rates rivaling that of China. The world's biggest appetite for illegal drugs and legal firearms.

A rail system which can only get to 85 mph in one small sector of Amtrak.

Please continue, this is fascinating.

Bye bye OP! How can you blame your family issues on Thai Immigration?

As I mentioned then, my wife had to return to the states 5 weeks ago due to her father’s ill health. Now, her 87 year old mother was just diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, so I am returning home to help Laura with them. No more visa craziness. It’s not what I could of ever imagined when we arrived, but the damn Immigration cloud has been lifted.

Enjoy your flight, don't freeze too much and please don't expect your own folks to be like Thai people, at least the ones I know and like as my friends, or relatives.

One last question. Where's a country where they help you with sick relatives and where you don't need a visa/

Enjoy your flight, the junk food on board of the plane and the one at home that makes too many people from your country as big as Changs.

Good Luck to you. I completely understand. I think many arrive here later in life with a certain expectation of how it was when they visited years ago and like all things, they change. We also all know that not all changes are for the better. I am from the US and I have to say that living and working here is significantly better then the US I left behind.

I think in the end though, it takes time getting life dialed in and adapting to moving away from ones home country ( 1 year is not long enough, that is basically a long holiday). I also think many do not really consider where they are about to move to and it has a huge impact on their mental state of mind.

The good news is at least the US govt trusts some people with a license to carry a gun. In Thailand only the criminals and the mentally unbalanced have the guns.

Maybe, if you don't mind, keep your TV account for a few months.

And after you are settled in the USA maybe tell us how you feel about leaving Thailand.

I don't know you and I don't predict anything. Maybe you will be happy, maybe you will miss Thailand.

I think sometimes we only think about the good things if we move to somewhere else and then it's not there anymore.

After living in Thailand for over 10 years and moving back, I can tell you I do not miss it one bit and that is being sincere.

Well given the rate of gun crime in Thailand the last part of your post suggests most are mentally unbalanced.

As an American, am offended by your comment 55.  The English, Australians, Germans, and French I have had conversations with are the ones always putting down thailand's people and culture and terrible traffic and infrastructure in my experience.

Though these conversations are in bars and alcohol is involved, so would not consider my opinion a scientific study ????

As i have always said and will repeat once again. If you dislike Thailand so much just leave and stop complaining. You are not going to change Thailand any more than you can change anywhere else. Either adapt or leave. I can think of far worse places i could be. Never had any issues with Thai Immigration laws and for the most part the Thais. Learn how to avoid the scams as in any country , people who treat you with disrespect and just deal with the daily ups and downs. If you are totally unwilling to adjust to a foreign country you really don,t belong there in the first place. I see so many foreigners walking around with a scowl on their face and also ask myself why don,t they just leave if they are so miserable.

Who are you to tell people what to do and how to feel?

I can think of far better places you could be as well if you could afford them.

The difference being, in Thailand you can go to a garlic festival or a church or a music fest or a school and not worry about being gunned down by someone you don't know.

Can you find me in this photo ?

Yeah but much more likely to be run over crossing a street or in a vehicle accident in Thailand. Dead is dead.

What is American order, structure and efficiency? You guys do not even have a social system that help people to get back on their feet.

And about you being a military person, that says it all. You need somebody who gives you orders, because you don't learn how to be independent in the States.

What's important for you is in no way important for Thai people and expats who live here longer.
