Inkjet printer/scanner - Canon? Brother?... Other?

Recommended Posts

The power supply on the old Canon MP140 bit the bullet last week so looking for a replacement combo printer/scanner. At work recently, I was using Canon G2100 which was very good, fast and I liked the big, built-in ink tanks. I have never been a fan of after-market bottle kits stuck on the outside. This device was also very economical in that a lot of full color images, google earth captures, were being printed daily but after 4 months, the black tank was just down to the half. Just noticed the G3100 on lazada for 4180 baht so very tempting as they are nearer 5800 baht retail.

I have also seen Brother printer/scanners on special offer here and they had a good reputation when I used them years ago in the US.

Any advice or alternative recommendations?

Thanks!

Why inkjet? Laser is cleaner, faster, better, lasts longer and never clogs up.

Just the power supply? Why not repair or replace it?

Infrequent printer. My office has laser printers but they're too expensive for home printing.

It's an integrated, sealed black block type power supply with 24 V DC output. Can't get into it.

Obsolete printer anyway and it was getting harder to find cartridges.

For infrequent printing a laser is very suitable. I use mine once a month or less and am still on the original toner cartridge which has never blocked up or dried out in the 7 years I have owned it. Yes, laser may cost a bit more than inkjet, but not a huge amount more.

You can buy a suitable multi-purpose adaptor quite cheaply on Lazada. Fair comment about the cartridges though: if you can no longer find them or get them refilled then it's pointless trying to repair the printer.

I don't find laser at all cost effective for ad hoc colour home printing.

This isn't a regular laptop style brick power supply. It's INTEGRATED INTO the printer which would require disassembly. It doesn't have the standard laptop type output connectors and the 24 V is higher than most generic laptop power supplies anyway.

It has done well. It hasn't been retired gracefully. It has died.

If you are printing often enough that an inkjet survives between uses without getting gummed up then there's no doubt that it's the most cost effective way of doing colour prints.

However, if like me you don't print anything for weeks on end then need 50 sheets like NOW! you really can't beat a laser. They print first time, every time even after sitting for months.

For a long time I had an inkjet and mono laser, this actually made things worse as the inkjet was getting even less use. So I finally bit the bullet and bought a colour laser. Rather more expensive per colour print than an inkjet but if you're not blasting out hundreds of sheets the time you're not spending getting the beastie going when you do need it offsets the extra per sheet.

I have little cheapo Samsung laser for those mono prints (hangover from when it partnered the inkjet). The only time it didn't produce a perfect print after sitting was when the sheet included a 2-dimensional gekko baked into the surface, poor chap had evidently not been fast enough when the print sequence started ????

And I have one of these for the occasions that need colour (or copies / scans), double sided scanning and printing too, cost 15,500 Baht in October last year. Oh, and laser prints don't fade like some inkjets ????

My old printer wasn't even broken but I still bought a Canon G2100 instead as it wasn't much more in price that replacing the silly little cartridges in my old color inkjet. Only turn the new Canon on once a month to print my invoices and the tanks are still 90% after 18 months use and not a hint of the print head being clogged.

My experience is limited and I used to print at least 1 sheet a day. Canon colour was better than Brother. My Canon had external CISS tanks. Now one can buy a Canon with integral refillable tanks.

I bought a HP printer about 2 years ago, HP Officejet 6830 All in one.

Unable to print a word doc without there being an extra large bottom margin, have to revert to some old word docs that I have and use them as a template.   HP were "not aware" this was an issue but despite trying different things said "Sorry. no can fix !"

Found the red cartridge often would not work, discovered that the slightest vibration stops the cartridge connecting properly, sometimes have to press down on the printer to get red to work.

An old HP printer I had lasted years with never an issue.

Bought the Canon G3010 on lazada for 4180 baht. Delivered in two days. Beyond filling the tanks, the setup and sharing was quicker and easier than previous Canon multi-purpose machines. Haven't done any direct printing from the phone yet, maybe try that next week.
