Texas shooting suspect told police he targeted 'Mexicans'

EL PASO, Texas (Reuters) - The suspected gunman accused of killing 22 people in a shooting rampage at Walmart in El Paso, Texas last weekend confessed while surrendering and told police he was targeting "Mexicans," according to an El Paso police affidavit released on Friday.

 

The suspect, Patrick Crusius, 21, came out of his vehicle, stopped at an intersection, "and stated out loud 'I'm the shooter'", Detective Adrian Garcia said in the affidavit on Sunday, a day after the shooting.

 

Crusius has been charged with capital murder and is being held without bond.

 

The affidavit said Crusius waived his right to remain silent after he was taken into custody and told detectives he entered the Walmart with an AK47 and multiple magazines.

 

"The defendant stated his target (was) Mexicans," the affidavit said.

 

Crusius is accused of shooting and killing 22 people and wounding two dozen more on Saturday, shortly after a manifesto appeared online explaining his motivation and decrying a "Hispanic invasion" of the United States.

 

Most of those listed as dead had Hispanic names.

Just hours later, a gunman wearing body armor and a mask opened fire in a crowded neighborhood in Dayton, Ohio, killing nine people, including his own sister.

 

President Donald Trump visited both communities on Thursday and was met with chanting protesters who accused him of inflaming tensions with anti-immigrant and racially charged rhetoric.

 

Authorities said Crusius drove 11 hours from his hometown of Allen, Tex., near Dallas, to perpetrate a massacre in the predominantly Hispanic city of El Paso. Authorities say the mass shooting is being investigated as a hate crime and act of domestic terrorism.

 

Democratic presidential candidates have accused Trump of fanning racist, white nationalist sentiments with anti-immigrant, racially charged language at rallies and on Twitter. They said he has created political climate conducive to hate-based violence.

 

Trump suggested on Friday he could persuade the powerful National Rifle Association lobby group to drop its strong opposition to gun restrictions after recent mass shootings that have reignited the gun control debate.

 

Nearly half of all Americans believe another mass shooting in the United States is highly likely soon, according to a Reuters/Ipsos public opinion poll released on Friday.

 

White House officials and big social media companies met on Friday to talk about how to curb extremism online after the shootings but the White House declined to comment on who took part in the closed-door session.

Heard similar before from trump, told dems and republicans not to be afraid of challenging nra line on gun control I believe.

 

Then after meeting nra resistance to his “proposal”, he chose to act in a manner that reflected the nra’s line on gun control.

Strange that it mainly (not exclusively) the USA which has continued mass shootings,  what spurs this action by people who can buy these weapons?

Mental health is not the sole reason, it is a complex issue requiring intense investigation and a willingness to LISTEN on all sides of the debate.

You are conflating all mass shootings with this mass shooting that was politically motivated and targeted at Hispanic immigrants.

confessing and witnesses is not the same as pleading guilty. the law must be applied equally to all regardless of scenario.  there is a little known concept called "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law"

Even that is weak tea. What about reinstating the assault weapon ban that timed out before? The realistic goal isn't no mass shootings. The realistic goal is to reduce them greatly. I don't think background checks will be enough for that.

I completely agree. Assault rifles are not needed, by anyone other than a military force. For hunting? Keeping your house safe? It is all about the feeling of manliness that some guys feel, when they fondle their 17 weapon collection.

That's just the legal situation. Even people that have confessed and you have video of the crimes are technically not guilty until actually CONVICTED.

As El Paso was another case of white supremacist terrorism, it may be useful to consider this incident in the context of the growing threat of white supremacist hate crimes and terrorism. At this point in time since the election of the current occupant of the white house, white supremacist terrorism is now the most damaging kind in the U.S. followed by Islamist. It used to be Islamist was causing more damage. Why is that? Well I and many others think the racist xenophobic rhetoric of "trump" combined with a weak national effort at even naming, much less fighting white supremacist terrorism. If anything positive might come from El Paso, perhaps over time, especially if the current potus can be removed, then hopefully the fight against white supremacist terrorism can be beefed to a similar level of urgency as Islamist.

You are correct, racist and white supremacist groups existed before Trump, but I don’t recall any other US President race baiting, not do I recall any other racist mass killer parroting the words, terms and themes of any President other than Trump.

 

This President with his ‘good people on both sides’ when one side are neo-Nazis, and his language of ‘infestation’, ‘animals’..... directed at immigrants is fanning the flames of race hate and has emboldened white supremacist.
