Fire Man Escapes Through Window as Blaze Engulfs Electronics Shop
Picture courtesy of Khaosod A man was forced to escape through a window after a fire broke out in his electronics shop in the early hours of the morning, prompting a full emergency response in Pranburi district, Prachuap Khiri Khan. At approximately 00:30 on 2 August, officers from Pranburi Police Station were alerted to a fire at a commercial building housing Charoensin Electronics, located at the entrance of Soi Phetcharat in Ban Tamru, Khao Noi Subdistrict. Fire engines from the Pranburi Municipality, Khao Noi Municipality, Nong Ta Taem Subdistrict Administrative Organisation and the Pranburi Rescue Foundation were immediately dispatched to the scene. The fire had engulfed the ground floor of the two-and-a-half-storey building, which served as both a sales and repair shop for audio equipment. Witnesses reported thick black smoke billowing from the premises and loud cracking sounds from within. Local residents attempted to contain the flames using garden hoses, but their efforts were hindered by a closed metal roller door, which prevented access to the interior. Upon arrival, firefighters struggled to gain entry and were forced to forcibly break down the doors. As they did, thick smoke poured from the second-floor windows. It took more than 30 minutes of intense firefighting to bring the blaze under control. Unfortunately, the fire had already destroyed a large number of valuable items, including amplifiers, speakers, karaoke systems and two motorcycles. Much of the damaged equipment belonged to customers and acted as fuel for the flames. A neighbour, who lives opposite the building, told reporters they first heard a persistent high-pitched buzzing sound. “We thought someone had left something switched on,” the neighbour said. “Then a man from across the street shone a flashlight at us and shouted, ‘Fire!’ We saw the smoke getting thicker and tried using a garden hose, but it was no use. We could see red inside the building and started hearing small explosions from equipment, so we had to retreat.” Mr Bird, the shop owner, recounted the terrifying experience. “I had just finished cleaning the air conditioner around 10 or 11pm and went to relax. At about 12:20am I smelled something burning. I heard what sounded like strong wind and opened my bedroom door. The smell hit me straight away, so I went down to the mezzanine but only managed two steps before thick smoke forced me back.” “I ran to the bedroom window and signalled to my neighbours across the street that there was a fire. Then I had to climb down through another room, using the roof and a window to escape. Once outside, I saw the flames and realised everything downstairs was alight. I never leave plugs in, so I believe it must have been an electrical short circuit, in the system.” Mr Bird said he had gone downstairs at 23:00, to store some items and everything appeared normal at that time. Police and fire investigators are examining the scene to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Adapted by Asean Now from Khoasod 2025-08-03 -

Thai - Cambodia Conflict Army Permits UNHCR & ICRC to Visit Detained Soldiers
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. The Royal Thai Army has opened the way for representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to visit 18 detained Cambodian soldiers, following allegations from Phnom Penh that the detainees had been mistreated. Speaking at Army Headquarters in Bangkok on 2 August, Army Spokesman Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree said the claims from the Cambodian side were “expected” and “distorted,” intended to undermine the credibility of the Thai military. The Cambodian troops were taken into custody by Thai forces after a ceasefire agreement was reached between the two sides. The Cambodian government later accused Thailand of physically abusing its soldiers prior to their repatriation. Maj. Gen. Winthai refuted the claims, stating that under international law, specifically the Geneva Conventions, the temporary detention of enemy combatants following a ceasefire is legally permissible, particularly in cases where the situation on the ground remains unstable or where armed conflict has not fully ceased. “The Royal Thai Army is following all protocols in strict accordance with the Geneva Conventions,” he said. “We had already planned to invite international organisations, including the ICRC, to monitor the welfare of the detained soldiers, in order to maintain transparency.” He also noted that Thai authorities were well aware of Cambodia’s likely attempts to politicise the incident and damage the image of the Thai military. He affirmed that Thailand is conducting all procedures within the framework of international law and remains open to monitoring by appropriate international bodies. Representatives from the UNHCR and ICRC may proceed with inspection visits through the appropriate legal and diplomatic channels, as outlined in international law. Thai officials have pledged full cooperation. The situation remains sensitive, as tensions between the neighbouring countries have not fully subsided, despite the formal ceasefire. No further military confrontations have been reported, but the Thai side insists that a cautious approach remains necessary to ensure national security and regional stability. The gang, which kidnapped the victim from her home in Trang Province and demanded 300,000 baht for her release, was intercepted in Satun in the early hours of the morning of 2 August. The arrest was the result of a coordinated effort by Region 9 Provincial Police, working with officers from Trang and Satun, Si Kao Police Station and the Satun Highway Police. Two vehicles used in the abduction were stopped at a checkpoint on Yantarakarn Khamthorn Road in Thung Nui, Khuan Kalong District, Satun Province at approximately 02.00. The victim was safely rescued. The suspects were named as: • Mr Prateep, also known as Long, 45 – the alleged ringleader, who has a criminal record and is currently listed as wanted, by the Royal Thai Police, in connection with a 2022 robbery of methamphetamine seized as evidence in a special operation in Songkhla. • Mr Chokchai, alias Bao, 34 • Mr Sila, alias Jo, 30 • Mr Woranan, alias Muen, 35 The incident began at 12:30 on 1 August, when the gang stormed the home of the victim, Ms Onnaparin, in Moo 3, Mai Fak subdistrict, Si Kao district, Trang. Armed with a gun, Mr Prateep forced the young woman into a black car and fled the scene. Her husband, Mr Chinawat, reported the kidnapping to Si Kao Police. Officers quickly responded by instructing him to continue negotiating with the abductors to stall for time while police reviewed CCTV footage and tracked the suspects’ escape route. Investigators traced the vehicles through Palian District in Trang and into neighbouring Satun Province. At 02.30 on 2 August, police intercepted the cars at the Thung Nui security checkpoint and successfully apprehended all four suspects without incident. The suspects have been transferred back to Si Kao Police Station in Trang, the location of the original abduction, where they will face multiple charges including armed kidnapping, unlawful detention and extortion. Police Colonel Somphong Suwannawong and Police Colonel Sakda Charoenkul, Deputy Commanders of the Region 9 Investigation Division, led the operation, which was praised for its swift and coordinated response. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and further charges may follow. Adapted by Asean Now from Daily News 2025-08-03
