Thai Health Minister allegedly duped by bureaucrats into delisting hemp as Category 5 drug

Featured Replies

This is a fake scare story. Generally speaking, hemp used to mean a biological category that included the plants that were grown for making rope as well as marijuana plants of all kinds. Now, with the added condition that the products must contain less than 0.2% THC (the stuff that makes you high), hemp relates to all those plants that either do not contain THC or that contain less than 0.2% in the CBD product derived from them.

These are the standards that are to be found in most Western countries. I cannot say for sure about ALL EU countries but the ones I have been in recently had CBD products for sale.

So why the fake scare story?

  • So what? It's harmless isn't it?   I had a sneaking suspicion that the government and its minsters are just about as dumb as they come, is this a confirmation of that fact?

  • Dumb and dumber. But I see this also in expat governments too; persons appointed as a minister but have no clue on the job or experience.

  • Being duped is easy enough with some palm oil to lubricate proceedings ????

A bit confused why this is a bad thing.

Why is Add Carabao concerned, is this not a step in the right direction?

This is good news, and we will see just how good it is. Big meeting with the FDA on the 20th of Sept, so we will see.

so now I can order hemp oil from USA ?

Yes.  Order from Siam CBD (in Chiang Mai).  Looks like everything is imported from USA.

Thailand is right up there with the US government, which has been fighting the states which are legalizing ganga. This is inane. The drug was was lost 35 years ago. Give it up. Legalize everything. Usage would drop overnight. The problem is, too many powerful people are making too much money on the status quo.

So it's actually legal now to buy from this site for personal CBD use in Thailand?

It's not unique to Thailand, how stupid do the politicians think we are?

Is Add Carabao concerned that this is a bad idea in and of itself, or is it that the regulation doesn't go far enough and he wants them to get permission to use higher thc concentrations?

I do beleive minister is that stupid, but suspect he has gotten a little richer as opposed to duped

Hemp is brilliant stuff and ecofriendly. IF it was by accident, more of these accidents please.

I don't think it's legal, but neither is pirating computer software and films and people have been selling that stuff (pirated DVDs) openly at MBK for years.

The website itself is indeed vague on this; they seem to imply that technically it's illegal but because they don't see anything that contains THC we shouldn't be concerned.

Don't worry - they're not talking about coke or heroin.

Or 'brownies' in 7/11. ????????

No longer a cause to fight for and stay in the spotlight

BIB are the ones who control the sales on all islands and elsewhere.

Portugal and Holland are good examples that it works, but..............

This "expert" with professional history as engineer in - among others - private companies Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction PLC understands as much as me of "public health", "hemp" etc.  - and I know absolutely nothing. I therefore am also working in the Ministry of Public Health!

Maybe it is time to appoint professionals actually knowing what they are doing on subjects they know what they are talking about ...........

I must have aged a lot overnight, none of this story, makes one bit of sense to me at all.

Fake news. Anutin was not duped, his aim is to bring the Thai Law on hemp almost in line with the U.S. where they even allow less than 0.3% THC. Already there are companies who are growing medical canabis and are ready to manufacture food containing hemp extracts. All will be subject to strict control and licenced.

Pot still federally illegal. Only states have legalized it.

When is thc going to be legalized the part that actually kills cancer cells, when you have full spectrum medicines available and not just cbd then you have something to shout about Thailand, sad to get excited over hemp but one step at a time aye...
