I'm interested in getting a GPS package to work with a Nokia smartphone.

I've looked around the web but it seems there are no city maps for Thailand

except for Bankok.

Anyone have any experience.

Naka.

GPS = Global Positioning System

GPRS = General Packet Radio Service

I know that you can get packages for the last. With that you can access the internet with your mobile.

Letting your mobile work as a satellite based navigation system is new for me.

There are ways that the smartphones can use signal strength and tower ID to give an approx street position I think..

You can also use your legs and eyes for that. Just walk or run to a street corner and look for a blue sign on a pole, approx. 3 metres above street level and read. :o

To really know where you are (on a surface) you need longitude values and and latitude values at the same time. Measuring radio strength with a mobile phone as written in your post only gives either longitude or latitude (if you want to name it that way). Only GPS-equipment can give you longitude values and and latitude values at the same time.

Hello,

I just bought the Nokia GPS unit in Hong Kong a couple weeks ago, around 4000 baht. I haven't found any maps available for Thailand, and was only able to find a barely useable one for Hong Kong.

Where did you find the Bangkok map?

I bought the LD3W model. I didn't know there was a new model, the LD2. The Nokia website says something about maps but they are only available "through the application provider", whoever that is.

Can one of these GPS modules be used with other software, DeLorme, Magellen, etc. on a Windows laptop?

Shazbot........the smart2go is for windows mobile and symbian OS9 (E61,N73, etc.), and I am sticking with my 6630 for the moment. Nice lead though, thanks. Anyone know if you can use the bluetooth nokia gps module with other software for Windows Pc.
