A Thai man gave the excuse of having broken up with his wife and lost his job for abandoning almost 40 dogs and cats at a house in Songkhla, southern Thailand.

Watchdog Thailand (WDT) and Smile Dog Home had gone to the property in Soi 45 Kanchanawanich where they found the emaciated animals eating the corpses of ones that had died.

There were 29 dogs and 8 cats still alive.

"Ek", 24, said that he and his wife had taken in the strays and looked after them together. But after their break-up his life was in a mess and he also lost his job. He didn't ask for help.

Now he has admitted animal cruelty charges and faces a fine of up to 40,000 baht when the case goes to court.

The animals are now in the care of WDT and Smile who can be contacted on 09 1846 6524 if you are interested in giving the animals a new home.

Some have already been assigned new owners.

Sounds like he's suffering from depression and needs help.

More likely a mental disorder. Why the heck would anyone keep 40 dogs and cats at home?
