Help For The Uninformed And Computer Stupid.

Featured Replies

Another stupid suggestion. I know when talking and writing you need to use the abbreviation for a term or product, because writing out the whole thing would be time consuming and bores-om.

BUT, if a few members could go back over the past six months and come up with a list of all things referred to by letters....

and write out what it is and maybe a short explanation of its meaning it would be very helpful for us dummies.

Then Pin it ...

Thanks, JKJ

and no nasty replies!!!!

Many, many users (including myself sometimes) don't actually know what the acronyms stand for (and some, such as TWAIN don't stand for anything) they just get used :o

Bash the ones you don't know into Google, he can help. A lot of universities have online lists of what you want, Google 'it acronyms'.

A few tongue-in-cheek ones to get you started :D

PCMCIA : People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms

TWAIN : Technology (or Toolkit or Thing) Without An (or Any) Intelligent (or Important or Interesting) Name

ISDN : It Still Does Nothing

APPLE : Arrogance Produces Profit-Losing Entity

IBM : I Blame Microsoft or I Bought Macintosh

SCSI : System Can't See It

DOS : Defunct Operating System

BASIC : Bill's Attempt to Seize Industry Control

WWW : World Wide Wait (particularly apt for Thai connections)

A couple of real ones (from your heading):-

CDMA - Code Division Multiple Access (see, it doesn't really help to know) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDMA

USB - Universal Serial Bus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usb

The Wiki pages are very useful in actually describing what the acronyms actually ARE rather than what they stand for, if you see what I mean :D

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Great answer!! I wish I thought of it first. But had I, I would have still asked for help, because your suggestion requires me to do the work and I shy away from work as much as I can. Seriously it is the answer to all the acronyms used. Maybe if they start closing the bars at 12:00 then making the list I am asking for might be possible???

Thanks , JKJ

easy way with Google.

Search for

define:ACRONYM

eg

define:USB

define:PCI-X
