Processors - Motherboards?

Featured Replies

I am trying to put together a system for a youngster.

E-mail and browsing needed and some gaming facilities, but not leading edge.

Intel or AMD Duo core 3600?

IGb corsair memory

Gigabyte GA M61PMS2 for AMD option.

Budget 16K including win XP genuine.

Comments suggestions please.

With specs like corsair memory, you're not going to be getting very near your budget. If this is supposed to include a monitor, then you're really not going to get much at all. Wow, *including* winxp? Just that is nearly half your budget... add a LCD monitor and there goes the budget. Any miracle workers around here? Perhaps someone who can change water into wine? Set a more realistic budget or more realistic specs.

Does that motherboard come with onboard graphics, if not you need to spend more.

As soon as you want gaming then unless you mean basic gaming you need to spend a fair bit more. If the kid knows what games he wants to play, Google the games to see the minimum requirements (graphics card), then get something at least twice as good if you want him to be able to play the games properly. While l said 1000 for the case/psu you should spend 2000+ and get something decent with a few good fans. For even average games performance these days you're probably looking at 20-25k all up but it comes down to the games you want to play and how well you want to play them. Without games 16,000 is easy as you could have a cheaper cpu and less memory.

Memory prices have crashed :o in the past couple of months, 40%+ on many choices.

Yep, and was just informed by a distributor in Chiangmai there will be another big drop around May - July.

As was said before it depends what games are going to be played.

While a good cpu is needed you have to consider the video card which in some cases more important than the cpu.

IMHO unless a person plays games (that are more than like simcity 3000) or does video production, all you need is a computer with a cpu 1.5ghz, 512mb of ram, and a 64mb video card.

Any used computer with a P4 or AMD Athlon equivalent will do. You could buy this for 6-7k baht. Some of the used computer come with a legal version of XP (often if it comes from a business)

Its funny how people spend out 20k baht on a computer to surf the internet and create word docs.

The motherboard you listed looks good, with firewire, glan, raid, etc. It seems like a good choice to build a new machine on.

As for buying winXp maybe you can get it cheap when buying a OEM part. I remember one online seller here in Thailand offers this but I can't remember which one.

Thanks guys.

There is a DVD RW in the price and the Win XP is 3100baht.

We have an lcd screen already, so that is not an issue.

On the memory side Corsair/Kingston/Patriot all come out around the same price.

FYI Athlon X2 cpu models are

3600+

3800+

4200+

4600+

5000+

5200+

3600+ 3,420

3800+ 3,980

4200+ 6,420

4600+ 8,370

5000+ 9,210

5200+ ?

I have the 3800+ dual core and quite happy with it. Haven't found anything (high end games included) that won't run under it. The video card is also key for higher performance though.

Seagate 80Gb Sata MYR155 (1500 baht?)

OK, we're probably on different wavelengths here. As in the definition of a computer that can actually play modern games in anything more than a slideshow. Oh, well, I still wonder why you'd need corsair memory ($$$) for what comes out to be an extremely budget computer.

As many other people say, the video card is the key. Anything less than 5k on the video card and you're essentially getting performance similar to on-board graphics, which is far from what is required to play modern games. Throw games out the window and you'll fit into your budget nicely.

Firefoxx, Corsair Value RAM has crashed in price recently, it's now almost the same price as Kingston Value RAM.

Last month in Singapore you could buy 1GB Corsair 667 Value Select for SD99. At least half a dozen big shops at Sim Lim Square had it for that price, some have now (three days ago) dropped the price to SD88, that's around 1,900 baht!!! for Corsair or Kingston, prices have even dropped in Thailand but not as dramatically. Astral is in Malaysia so prices will probably be closer to Singapore prices, especially if he has a look around Imbi Plaza.

Hmm, yes, it seems so, looking a HWH's prices. Very atypical of them... even Kingston's so-called "value" ram was more expensive than the typical ram. Now it's nearly as cheap. OK, my bad. Price at HWH is 2,400 for Kingston, comparable to PQI or other cheaper ones.
