A Thai student is being held by the Egyptian security agency in Cairo on suspicion of having links to the Islamic State (IS) extremist group.

The Thai Embassy in Cairo said in its Facebook post on Saturday that the Thai student, whose name was withheld, was detained by Egyptian security officials on September 24th after IS-related images, and a social media clip of the student claiming that he supports Islamic revolution in Egypt were found on his smartphone.

The Embassy said that it is closely monitoring the case and has sent a letter to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to seek permission to visit the detainee. They say they are also coordinating with senior foreign service officials, adding that the Embassy’s letter has already been passed on to the security agency.

CAIRO (NNT) - The Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, has taken steps to help a Thai student who has been arrested in the country for suspected involvement with the Islamic State (IS) group.

According to the embassy’s Facebook page, security officials in Cairo arrested the Thai student on September 24, 2019, after they found some pictures apparently linked to the IS group in his mobile phone. The student also confessed that he supported the IS cause in an interview posted online by a television station.

The Royal Thai Embassy has issued an announcement on the issue.

1. The embassy has been following the issue since the beginning and has been informed that the Thai student is in the custody of an Egyptian security agency for further questioning.

2. On September 26, 2019, the embassy sent a request to Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting a meeting with the Thai student. The embassy is closely coordinating with high-level representatives of Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to follow up on the situation, and the ministry had already contacted the security agency.

3. The embassy is coordinating with the Office of the Sheikhul Islam and the Egyptian security agency to follow up on the situation and to request a meeting with the student.

4. To prevent unwanted incidents, the embassy has issued a warning for Thai people in Egypt to take precautions while travelling to risk-prone locations. The embassy is working with the Thai Students’ Association in Cairo and the Student Union of Thailand to help warn Thai students in Egypt not to be involved in Egyptian politics and activities that might present a security risk.

The embassy has expressed its concern about the safety of the detained Thai students, as Egypt places importance on the issue of security. The embassy is taking steps to help the student while taking the student’s well-being into consideration. The embassy is also looking into other channels to help the student.

The Embassy warned Thai people in Egypt to take care in travelling to risky locations, including by coordinating with the Thai Students Association in Cairo under royal patronage, as well as the United Thai Student Club. Thai students living in Egypt should take caution to avoid interfering with either the internal politics of Egypt or in situations that randomly occur, security risks and related matters.

How many Thais go to Egypt to study? I bet he’s from South Thailand. Sad how internet propaganda can influence young minds.

The interference of the"Grand Imam"clearly shows that the boy is doing Islamic studies in Cairo. That would definitely mean he is a Thai Moslem.Such guys are an easy prey for extremists and Jigadis.A young boy all alone in an over-crowded,noisy and multi-cultural mega city like Cairo(22 million inhabitants from tens of various countries, cultures, backgrounds and religions).Bored and frustrated, with no family, few friends and hardly any money,he would, understandably, spend most of his time on the internet, surfing across hundreds of sites related to his main field of interest:Islamic studies. Can you imagine how easy it is for experienced extremists to hunt down,brain-wash and finally recruit a guy like this.I do not claim that I"know" this is what happened,I am only saying that this is a repeatedly occuring scenario. One more point, why is there a photo of a church attached to the story??? Don't the Nation journalists know the difference between a church and a mosque???
