Nitinai

Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, President of Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) said on Tuesday (October 8 ) that AOT had reported the progress of Suvarnabhumi Airport’s Concourse A Annex project (formally known as Passenger Terminal 2 project) at a recent meeting with Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob.

“This project is valued at Bt4.2 billion,” he said. “It has become highly controversial since many parties argue that the construction is out of line with the airport’s master development plan.”

Nitinai said that he has explained the need for the project to the minister, and promised that AOT would make sure that the public and dissenters understand before construction starts.

“Many people have asked me if the construction of the Concourse A Annex will worsen the traffic congestion on the motorway and around the airport,” he said.

“To answer this question accurately, AOT is now studying the impact on surrounding areas and other modes of transportation by collaborating with related agencies such as the Highway Department, the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning, and the Architect Council of Thailand.”

Nitinai added that the study would be completed by the end of October and that he would present the results to the Transport Minister early in November.

The application for a construction permit for the project is currently underway. The annex is expected to handle over 40 million passengers per year and help alleviate the congestion within Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The airport just had its 13th birthday but they have not even added a third runway which is a no brainer. Takes forever to get anything done here.

Takes forever to get a new runway built anywhere (except perhaps China).  Heathrow only has two runways and they have been lobbying for a third for over a decade.  Still not built.

Bangkok's issue is not the number of runways, it is the crowding at the terminal.

I thought they had agreed to build the third runway in Pattaya which would certainly mean there would be no impact on the Bangkok area traffic, should fit in nicely with the High Speed rail link.

master development plan 30 years old or so, what an argument, just build a goddamn new terminal and get over it.

They love to listen to their "masters" here...

If you actually see the master plan it is very well thought out.  The new proposed terminal is not, it is in a stupid location, really stupid, right in the corner of the airport grounds.  In this case I agree the master plan makes a lot more sense.

The new satellite concourse is looking good though (part of the master plan).

The Master Plan and how the proposed T2 is stupid.  Masterplan is surprisingly well thought out and looks good.  The new satellite terminal is structurally almost complete by the looks of things.  Why put T2 down in that corner?  Makes no sense.  Stick with the plan.

To the guy above who said forget the masterplan as it is 30 years old,  just build it! How is that better?  And what is wrong with that 30 year old plan?

I thought you put the horse before the cart, but then this is Thailand where logical things like that don't matter.

The application for a construction permit is already underway before they do the traffic study - yep Thailand where they put the cart before the horse.

They built the Morchit bus terminal 20 years ago ,and they still is not good public transport link  to get they ,buses still having to do a dodgy u-turn to get to Morchit, roads still bad .................You will have to wait a while for Swampy .

Make the new terminal, all on one ground floor level...it may help avoiding some depressed passengers using the top floors as a skydiving runaway...????

Isn't there a sense of disorder in this project process?

Study impact first, followed by design, followed by project bid & award, followed by construction permits (typically obtained by the project contractor).

The entire project needs to be delayed now until the EIA is completed. Then finalize the project design and proceed to development.
