  • Random searches/urine tests of foreigners in the Sukhumwit area (especially around the Asoke intersection area) was very common a few years ago, to the extent this outrage made the international press

Ridiculous. Over the years many friends have been caught with weed and didn't pay more than 10000 thb.

I wonder why the op friend was not able to pay her way out ?

I would say, don't do drugs and be in possession of drugs than you would be ok , No sympathy, self inflicted problem.

Really ?

Do you consume alcohol ? ... that is a drug, drink coffee ? stimulant drug...Tobacco, sugar headache pill, Viagra ? All Drugs .. anything ingested that alters any balance in the body,  physical or mental can be considered a drug. Coca, opiates used widely in medicines for at least 1000 years, heck half the medial world is based on, the discovery, use and sale of and adaptation of drugs, that would include much you eat and drink.

Drugs will and do also keep many alive and functioning, maybe even you now friend. Fact is drugs do and have helped billions more than they have harmed, so stop with the drugs are bad mantra. That is one stupid statement.

The problem here and the ONLY problem is this drug is illegal to possess in Thailand and comes with very stiff penalties. Clearly this person wasnt trying to make a profit by trafficking, just unfortunate they wernt aware of the laws and restrictions or smart enough to avoid breaking a law that carries very harsh penalties. Dont cast too many judgemental stones. I bet you break Thai law regularly, your just not aware of them.

That its a self inflicted problem is the only part id agree with, I hope they get deported soon, and get some help with the bipolar issue.

Very nearly everybody does drugs, depending on your definition of drugs.

Coffee, tea, alcohol, sugar, coco, aspirin /analgesics, etc. All of these affect our actions and judgment.

Of course it is ultimately safer to bend to the will of every major and minor authority figure or group in order to avoid issues with their beliefs, irregardless of your own.

Ask any, motor cycle, taxi driver for a bag of Thai Stick (WEED). Usually arrives in minutes of ordering. This means one thing weed is available and been grown in large quintitys. I stayed in a ozzy hotel for 6 months in Pattaya few years ago. The roof where I hung my Loundry to dry was covered in canabis plants. Ideal growing place out of site the same hotelier allso was dealing in ice a drug that's wouth a fortune. He certainly is not the only person growing and dealing drugs 4 floors up from where those in uniforms visit to collect, there tea money and check that all is well  above the street. Every, now and again a tourist is made a example of to appear canabis is not tolerated, its a huge joke and that is just what I've witnessed, regularly. Walking Street is full of sellers pushing canabis.

Just need to go to walking Street or Beach Road at any time of the night and watch the proliferation of drug deals happening. The Thais are partying on the beach awaiting their customers, then walk across to their designated tree and dig in the sand for the drug supply much to their customers appreciation.

This occurs nightly even in front of the Police station at Soi nine????????‍♂️????????????

Stupid girl, why even visit Thailand in the first place? There are many other countries you can smoke weed legally. Just use a brain.

Not long ago this would have been no issue. Thats why people came here. Great weed and a free and easy attitude.  Then the disgraced Nixon started the failed war on drugs making money all round for every corrupted cynic in the world all the way up to the UN. It did not take corrupt Thai cops and judges, using the inhuman jail conditions and the sick laws to see how much they could exhort from young people bought up in more civilised countries who do not understand the medieval drug laws here. Truly sickening. 60% of the prisoners in Thailand are in for drug related offences the majority of whom are women. The depressing thing is that it is due to western influences but as the west comes to its senses Thailand is left in the judicial gutter of failed western polices...because it makes so much money for the narco mafia,  police, the prison system,  the judges and politicians. And it allows sanctimonious cowards, hiding behind the skirts of corrupt officials to cheer at the misfortune of others who are victims of unjust laws. Not so long ago 26 men and boys were executed by hanging in Iran. Every single male in the village...with the applause of the UN, UNICEF and the WHO. This thread is about a woman being tortured in Thailand. Very sad.

I think it's the other way around, if anything..  sounds like the 'bi-polar girl' is getting a much harsher treatment than the usual bloke-according to the reports of similar cases on this post.. wondering if her 'bi-polar' behavior when she got caught really <deleted> off the cops and so their throwing the book at her..

which country is she from?

It's so utterly distressing for her and so unfair I just hope she's ok. You are right they are backward here and fixed it to stay that way.

Unfair, you know the rules. If you don't care, don't moan when you get caught.

Yeah the rules say I can buy hash oil in a shop legally,so every right to moan. That being said I think there are a few pieces of this story that are missing.

friend of mine was fined 500 baht for having one joint, which is the going rate for such a small amount.

That's funny because 30 years in East Asia, Thailand I'd always heard that it was 30k. 10k bribe to make it disappear before charges.

Have to be really dim to have weed on you here. Don't feel least bit sympathetic.

Yes, I do not understand it, too. Such small amount... Why so aggressive by the Thai authorities? Or maybe it was a lot more than 1g?

Well. all we have is the OP's understanding of the situation.

Perhaps he has misunderstood or was not told the full story. I find it difficult to believe (but who knows) that someone would be arrested, held in jail and deported over such a small amount.

Yes 1 gram for the prosecution and the rest for sale ????

Another Full Moon Party idiot comes to Thailand ? Sorry no pity. Yes its only weed but i guess like so many just ignored all the warnings.
