Well, given that Trump has imposed 10% tariffs even on countries that run a trade deficit with the USA, there isn't a lot of evidence to support that as Trump's goal. -

Why is anyone surprised? Thailand has long been the most southern Province (มลรัฐ) of China. Once Thailand monetized in the 19th century, after folks no longer paid taxes with corvée labor, the Chinese, long familiar with a monetary system and concepts such as debt and interest, quickly filled the gaps in the economy, including becoming the tax collectors for the government. Today the Chinese, working with the sympathetic Thai-Chinese community, can easily work within the Thai economic system and avoid the legal restrictions on other foreign nationals. -

IMO all any nation should be looking for is fair trade. If one accepts products in an industry with no tariffs then it should go both ways. I have no idea if this is the goal. -

If you look, you can see all the markets and the news and the oil prices and anything else you want to look at in real time. And when the news flashed about Trump's China threat, the market did reverse a. little, but it didn't tank by any means. The markets are bouncing around all over today, but much of what's going on probably doesn't have much to do with Trump's China threat. The Wall Street people know better than to overreact to that kind of talk, and those are the people running the market.- 1
