Hackers have attempted to disrupt state-run the Krung Thai Bank computer system used for the registration of subscribers to Phase 2 of the Government’s “Chim-Shop-Chai” (Eat-Shop-Spend) scheme, resulting in delays to registration today, Mr. Payong Srivanich, the bank’s managing director disclosed this morning (Friday).

In offering an apology to members of the public for the disruption, he said that bank officials have fixed the problem and are taking further precautions to prevent another attempt on the system.

He said both the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society have been made aware of the problem and are also taking preventive measures to ensure smooth registration. As usual, registration for the second day today started at 6am and, by 9.34am, all 500,000 subscribers were registered. Registration will resume at 6pm for today’s second batch of 500,000 subscribers.

Bank clamps down on people using apps to tamper with ‘Eat, Shop, Spend’ registration

Krung Thai Bank’s executive director Payong Srivanich

Krung Thai Bank’s executive director Payong Srivanich reported this week that it's monitoring of registration for phase 2 of the government’s economic stimulus scheme ‘Eat, Shop, Spend’ had uncovered a group of people tampering with the registration process by using certain applications to put themselves ahead of other registrants.

This has resulted in a slower registration process, for which the bank has apologized to customers.

The bank is watching the system very carefully in case it further affects customers. Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana is collaborating with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society on measures to prevent future interference and guarantee smoother service to registrants.

The ‘Eat, Shop, Spend’ scheme is part of the government’s Bt316-billion stimulus package designed to boost economic growth. The first phase was launched on September 23 and achieved its registration target in the middle of October, allowing customers to spend in specific shops before November 30.

The second phase opened for registration on October 24, with a quota of 1 million registrants per day. The registration was divided into two rounds, each for 500,000 people. The first round opened at 6am and the second at 6pm. The second phase scheme is valid through December 31.

What they aren't saying is that their security protocols for this cash splash are not as good as they should be.

exactly !! Blame the attack rather than thier ability to design a system secure from attack.

The usual half baked Thai government idea by putting 10s of millions of people on the road at the same time causing mayhem and traffic jams and consequently road accidents overloading the roads systems and using fuels and other car related products that Thailand import, and all that so Peter can spend 1,000 baht with Paul, lame idea....

If they couldn't actually take the system down entirely, that's good evidence the hackers were locals.

Probably inside locals doing the hacking and rorting the system. It's not like it hasn't been done before. Thailand 4.0.

I was talking to Blind Freddy when they announced this scheme and he predicted it would be a scammers free-for-all.
