I have asked dozens of friends who are GM's at big hotels, owners of guest houses, restaurants, bars, spas, gift shop and travel agencies. Without exception they all say the same thing. Business stinks.

 

The vast majority of Chinese come here on budget tours. The rooms are booked at 60% off rack rates. The buffet meals are drastically discounted. The airlines are making some money and so is King Power. Anyone else? 7/11 maybe? Tesco?

 

Wake up. Deal with reality. Believe the TAT nonsensical numbers at your own peril.

I just spent 3 days walking around in Bangkok (definitely not a walking friendly city) and no doubt the numbers of Westerners are down, while the number of Asians are the majority of visitors.  At the hotel I was staying- about mid range price-  I only saw 2 other Westerners at breakfast and the  rest of the room filled with Asians.  Interestingly enough, there were several Thai families apparently from other provinces as the car park had many out of Bangkok plates.  The hotel did  appear busier than 3 months ago when I was there.

 

The hotel was definitely not fully booked  and the traffic on Sukhumvit which is usually horrid, actually moved quite well.  Taxi drivers actually turned on the meters without me asking them to which means they need the business.

 

Wife has a few friendss in the tourist business in Samui- indicating a depression in tourism.

I do not believe any of these number. Entering a country does not mean, you do holiday and spend money. They count also transit people.

they belong to the class of those who can own Lexus or Mercedes high-end.

I rarely see Laotian semi-trailers.

Similar situation to where I stay in Patong, although there have been a few more folk milling around of late, but nowhere near the amount in the previous years at this time.

 

I regularly speak to real estate spruikers, hotel and guesthouse owners, as well as small business owners and also have a few contacts in some of the larger hotels, and the story is the same from them all – – – just had probably the worst low season ever and they are not very hopeful for the months to come.

 

In fact one hotel owner was bemoaning the fact that they are now worried as they have no occupants and no forward bookings!

 

Like your post has said, there are many places up for sale here also and it really is a sign of the times.

 

The regular nightspot areas are frequented by Indians and folk of similar ilk, but walking is their pastime, rather than spending any money.

Yes, I begrudge paying 50000 baht on a useless piece of paper that amounts to nothing more than a visa extension fee and that is on top of all of the other <deleted> they have added to the application process. Enough is enough. And it has zero to do with health, I have excellent insurance already as well as the cash to pay for pretty much any eventuality. The health insurance they propose is grossly inadequate on just about every measure, it is obscenely over priced and I very much doubt it would be honoured anyway. I dont like being scammed and thats what this is.

No. I believe my friend who had 18 buses the chinese yesterday. I not believe you, I not believe TAT. 

I was there. I believe my eyes. Maybe 30 per bus, more than 500 people. Pay 400 each. Good behavior, woman dress lovely, not complain. (But smoke a lot.) 

 

If not have chinese, her business same as your friend, have not many. But she smart to take care the chinese and she win.

My friend business in Phangnga yesterday have 18 buses of China. One minibus from Russia. Nobody. else.

Two them (the restaurant and hotel owners are Chinese Thai) ,They can speak Thai and some Chinese but this is not an area thats based on Chinese tour groups but backpackers and lower end western travelers ...hence their concerns about the lack of tourists /customers
